Half of workers at centerare illegal, U.S. says
PHILADELPHIA -- Immigrants ineligible to work in the United States comprised more than 50 percent of the work force at a T.J. Maxx distribution center in northeastern Pennsylvania, according to federal immigration agents, who ordered the company to terminate 274 employees.
Many have already resigned or been fired, T.J. Maxx said Tuesday.
Anthony Attardo, a Pittston Township supervisor, said the federal order backed his contention that the distribution center hasn't brought promised local jobs. The center opened in August.
Attardo said local officials backed a Keystone Opportunity Zone designation for the distribution center, exempting it from state and local taxes through 2013, because they were led to believe the center would bring 1,200 new jobs paying $8 to $10 per hour. But he said jobs have started at $6.50 an hour.
