HELOISE Old phones can be donated to campaign
Dear Readers: Do you have an old cell phone sitting in your closet or a drawer? Are you wondering what to do with it? There's a simple solution: Donate any unused wireless phones to the national Donate A Phone campaign.
Send them, along with any attachments or chargers, to:
Heloise's Donate A Phone (HH03)

This month, the Wireless Foundation will commemorate the success of the national Donate A Phone campaign, launched in 1999 to collect and recycle unused wireless phones in order to provide emergency phones for victims of domestic violence through the national Call to Protect program.
Since then, nearly 2 million wireless phones have been collected, keeping more than 200 tons of electronics out of landfills and helping provide more than 30,000 phones for domestic-violence victims.
All makes and models of wireless phones are accepted, and the phone doesn't have to be working. Donations are usually tax-deductible, and a receipt for the donation can be found at www.donateaphone.com or at my Web site, www.heloise.com.
Donate your old phone today -- it's the right thing to do. Heloise
Dear Heloise: In this hurricane season, here's a hint that I think often gets overlooked:
If you have to evacuate and hit the road, take your phone book with you. It contains toll-free numbers for hotels and motels, so you can call ahead and reserve a room if necessary. Also, when it comes time to return home, you have numbers you can call to check on things -- the utility company, for example. Jean Edwards, Irmo, S.C.
Dear Heloise: I would like to pass this helpful hint on to your readers: I keep a permanent black marker in my medicine chest. Whenever I get a new medication, I check for the expiration date on the package and then write that date in black marker right on the product. This saves loads of time having to search for the date every time you use a product. This way, you won't chance using out-of-date medications. Darlene Gulius, Via E-mail
