Series: The Browns lead the all-time series, 55-48. Since 1970, the Steelers are 39-24, including 27-6 in Pittsburgh. Bill Cowher has a 12-5 record against the Browns in the regular season and 2-0 in the playoffs. Butch Davis is 1-4 in the regular season and 0-1 in the postseason.
Fast start: Browns quarterback Tim Couch was 5-for-5 for 79 yards and a touchdown on Cleveland's opening drive of the game.
Injuries: Steelers left tackle Marvel Smith left the game in the first quarter when he reaggravated a shoulder injury. Browns wide receiver Quincy Morgan was attended to in the second quarter. He suffered a knee sprain and did not return. Dennis Northcutt replaced Morgan in the lineup.
Tying Swann: Jerome Bettis' second-quarter touchdown gives him 318 points in his career with the Steelers, tying wide receiver Lynn Swann for seventh place all-time.
Lineup changes: The Browns made the following players inactive for the game -- receiver C.J. Jones, defensive backs Roosevelt Williams and Michael Lehan, offensive lineman Enoch DeMar, defensive linemen Tyrone Rogers and Antonio Garay and tight end Aaron Shea. Kelly Holcomb was designated as the third-string quarterback. Shea's spot in the starting lineup was taken by Darnell Sanders. The Steelers' inactives were running back Dante Brown, offensive linemen Keydrick Vincent and Mathias Nkwenti, defensive tackle Chris Hoke, receiver Freddie Milons, tight end Jay Riemersma and linebacker Alonzo Jackson. Brian St. Pierre was the third-string quarterback. Riemersma was replaced in the starting lineup by Jerame Tuman.
Coming up: The Browns are home on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders (2-3), the defending AFC champions. Kickoff at Cleveland Browns Stadium is 1 p.m. The Browns also will be at home on Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. against Marty Schottenheimer's San Diego Chargers. The Browns will close the month against another former coach when they travel to New England on Oct. 26 to play Bill Belichick's Patriots. The Steelers travel to Denver next Sunday to play the Broncos (4-1). After an open week, the Steelers welcome the St. Louis Rams to Heinz Field on Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.
