AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas answered its critics Saturday. The Longhorns can tough it out to win a big game.
Freshman Vince Young shook off a sore right ankle to rally the Longhorns with his running and passing and scored the winning touchdown from a yard out on fourth down with five minutes left as No. 13 Texas beat No. 16 Kansas State 24-20.
The Longhorns (4-1, 1-0 Big 12), whose reputation suffered a beating after a 38-28 home loss to Arkansas on Sept. 13, will face No. 1 Oklahoma next week in Dallas.
Young limped off the field in pain after rolling his ankle on a sack in the third quarter. He returned in the fourth to lead Texas to the winning score after Chance Mock had little success getting the offense moving.
Young's fourth-down dive over the top of the line capped an 88-yard drive that started after Texas recovered Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson's fumble.
Roberson ran for 87 yards and two touchdowns -- including a 1-yard run that gave the Wildcats (4-2, 0-1) a 20-17 lead. But he also had three turnovers with two interceptions, including one in the end zone that killed a scoring chance late in the first half.
No. 1 Oklahoma 53, Iowa St. 7
AMES, Iowa -- Top-ranked Oklahoma looked sharp and overpowering in its tuneup for Texas.
Jason White tied a school record with five touchdown passes while throwing for a career-high 393 yards, Mark Bradley returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Oklahoma played its usual dominating defense in beating Iowa State 53-7 Saturday night.
The Sooners (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) piled up 613 yards in their third straight game with more than 50 points.
No. 4 Virginia Tech 48, Rutgers 22
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Bryan Randall threw for 250 yards and four TDs as Virginia Tech beat Rutgers for the 11th straight time.
Randall had scoring passes of 28 and 45 yards to Chris Shreve and two 10-yarders to Mike Imoh for the Hokies (5-0, 1-0 Big East).
Jimmy Williams scored on a 55-yard interception return and Cedric Humes had a 35-yard touchdown run in the final Big East meeting between the two schools.
No. 10 Southern California 37, Arizona St. 17
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Matt Leinart shook off a leg injury that proved more scary than damaging to rally Southern California.
Leinart, who hurt his right knee and ankle when linebacker Justin Burks sacked him in the second quarter, completed 13 of 23 passes for 289 yards, with scoring strikes of 57 yards to Keary Colbert and 33 yards to Brandon Hancock.
LenDale White, a freshman with 17 carries coming in, ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 21 attempts.
Ryan Killeen had three field goals for the Trojans (4-1, 1-1 Pac-10), who kept their slim national title hopes alive by winning after a triple-overtime loss at California last week.
No. 11 Georgia 37, Alabama 23
ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia scored 37 points by halftime -- the most Alabama has given up in a half in the modern era -- then held on for a sloppy victory.
The Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and scored another TD after recovering a fumble, building a 37-10 lead at the half.
At that point, Georgia already had put up more points on Alabama (2-4, 1-2) than it had scored in any of the previous 62 games between the schools.
No. 12 Nebraska 30, Troy St. 0
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Quarterback Jammal Lord ran for two touchdowns as Nebraska overcame a slow start to beat Troy State.
The Cornhuskers (5-0) broke open a 10-0 game with two touchdowns in the third quarter. Lord hit tight end Matt Herian on a 77-yard pass before Cory Ross ran in from 3 yards. Then Lord scored on a 6-yard run to push Nebraska's lead to 23-0.
Lord led the Huskers with 72 yards on 14 carries, and completed 7 of 12 passes for 135 yards, with an interception. The Trojans dropped to 3-3.
No. 14 Washington St. 30,Arizona 7
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Matt Kegel threw two TD passes and Jason David returned an interception for a score for Washington State.
Washington State (5-1, 2-0 Pac-10) dominated Arizona (1-5, 0-2) n the Wildcats' first game since coach John Mackovic was fired last Sunday. Mike Hankwitz is coaching the team on an interim basis. The Cougars rolled up 513 yards of offense to Arizona's 198.
UCLA 46, No. 18 Washington 16
PASADENA, Calif. -- Rodney Leisle returned from a first-half suspension to score on a fumble recovery and intercept a pass as UCLA rallied.
The 6-foot-3, 294-pound tackle was suspended for the half for punching a San Diego State player in the stomach last week.
The senior star made an impact on his very first play, after Washington's Roc Alexander took the second-half kickoff to his own 7 instead of downing the ball in the end zone.
No. 20 TCU 27, Army 0
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Brandon Hassell, making his third start in place of the injured Tye Gunn, threw two TD passes, including a 40-yarder to Bruce Galbert to start the second half.
Freshman Robert Merrill had his third straight 100-yard rushing game for the Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0 Conference USA) since replacing injured tailback Lonta Hobbs. Tyrone Sanders returned a questionable fumble 35 yards for a touchdown.
Hassell, a fourth-year junior who had never thrown a pass before taking over for Gunn, was 13-for-21 passes for 162 yards -- 151 after halftime -- in what might have been his last start.
Gunn played for the first time since separating his right shoulder in practice Sept. 9, and could return as the starter Friday night at South Florida.
Mississippi 20, No. 24 Florida 17
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Eli Manning directed a late 50-yard touchdown drive to lift Mississippi past reeling Florida.
For the second straight season, Ole Miss (3-2, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) held Florida (3-3, 1-2) scoreless in the second half to earn an "upset" victory, adding this to a 17-14 home win last year.
The loss dropped Gators coach Ron Zook to 11-8 in the 19 games since he took over for Steve Spurrier.
