Syria gets what it deserves

New York Daily News: Thirty years ago, Yom Kippur 1973, Syria was part of a dastardly sneak attack on Israel that started a bloody war. But on this Yom Kippur, following a horrific terrorist massacre in Haifa, Israel is engaged in a different kind of war -- the war on terrorism.
The civilized world should applaud Israel's bombing of a Syrian terrorist training camp yesterday. The raid followed a homicide strike on a Haifa restaurant that killed 19, including several children. Islamic Jihad, which took responsibility for the terror hit, and Hamas both have used the Syrian camp.
Israel is more than justified in attacking terrorist training bases wherever they are -- just as the United States was justified in wiping out Al-Qaida's terror facilities in Afghanistan.
Corrupt tyrant
Predictably, Syria called an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council to seek condemnation of Israel's defensive action. That a corrupt tyrant like Syria's Bashar Assad can cynically manipulate the world body is sad indeed. Inherit control of a sovereign nation and you're suddenly an esteemed member of the international community. It wasn't long ago that Saddam Hussein and the Taliban enjoyed the same status.
The question is, why won't the U.N. address the slaughter in Haifa? The target was a restaurant co-owned by Jews and Arabs. Destroying it sends a message that Arabs who try to live and work peacefully with Jews are expendable. The timing was Sabbath just before Yom Kippur. Staging the attack at that moment assured the death of the greatest number of people. That is the sick mind-set of a terrorist.
