PREP TENNIS Ursuline freshman Ezzo captures crown
Mooney's Rebecca Brocker and Britini Brocker won a sectional doubles title.
BOARDMAN -- Ursuline High freshman Kim Ezzo captured the Division II sectional tennis tournament Saturday with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Liberty's Ashley Hoff.
Ezzo was the only underclassman among the top four seeds. Erin Bennett, the second seed from Poland, and Emily Berry, the fourth seed from Struthers, along with Hoff, are all seniors.
By advancing to the semifinals, the top four seeds qualified for district competition this week at Massillon Jackson.
Hoff now has qualified for the district tournament all four years of her high school career -- once in doubles and three times in singles.
In the semis, Ezzo defeated Berry 6-4, 7-5 and Hoff defeated Bennett 6-3, 6-1. Bennett then defeated Berry 6-3, 6-4 in the third-place match.
Div. II doubles
In doubles competition, Rebecca Brocker and Britini Brocker, the top seed from Cardinal Mooney, captured the sectional championship by defeating Ashtabula Edgewood's Ashley Victor and Heather Victor 6-4, 6-4.
The team of Brocker-Brocker was runners-up last year.
In the semis, Brocker-Brocker defeated Poland's Liz Rothenberg and Samantha Gett, the fourth seed, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), and Victor-Victor stopped second-seeded Lisa Fedina and Ana Lungu of Ursuline 6-4, 7-5.
Rothenberg-Gett then defeated Fedina-Lungu in the third-place match, 6-3, 6-4.
All four doubles teams that reached the semifinals qualified for this week's district competition.
Division I
CANTON -- Two Canfield singles players and a doubles team from Boardman advanced to district competition after sectional play Saturday at the Hall of Fame Fitness Center.
Canfield's Rachel McGowan and Renee Lesnett reached the semifinals of the Div. I sectional, where they faced each other.
McGowan won 6-4, 6-2 and then lost to Canton GlenOak's Jacqui Lee in the championship match, 6-2, 6-1.
McGowan had reached the semis by defeating Massillon Jackson's Megan Stoll 7-5, 6-0, while Lesnett stopped Jackson's Claire Bing 6-1, 6-2. Lesnett later defeated Jackson's Kristen Robison in the third-place match.
The top four singles players and doubles teams qualified for next week's district competition at Rocky River.
Div. I doubles
In doubles competition, the Spartans' team of Kristin McNally and Tiffany Kreps earned the fourth seed for districts.
McNally-Kreps defeated Massillon Perry's Rachel Omicinski and Alexis Misko 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the quarterfinals and then lost to eventual champion Maggie Glassburn and Sarah Lehman of Jackson in the semis.
North Canton Hoover then stopped Boardman to determine the third and fourth positions. The team of Gina Tamburro and Lauren Hartung of Jackson was second.
