PREP SOCCER Howland spreads wealth, wins MAC crown
Six different players scored as the Tigers defeated Niles.
HOWLAND -- The Howland High boys soccer team clinched the Metro Athletic Conference championship Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Niles.
The Tigers (10-2-3, 7-1-2), who led 2-0 at halftime, got goals from six different players. Goal scorers were Cody Chappell, Kevin Draa, Andrew Garber, Jason Stan, Mike Maiorano and Lucas Martorana.
Assisting for Howland were Jeff Copp, Marc Dunbar, Dante Fiorino and Chappell, while Howland goalkeeper Zack Roscoe had three saves.
Niles' goal came from Dave McCormick and goalkeeper Joe Miller made 11 saves.
Warren JFK 3, Bloomfield 0
NORTH BLOOMFIELD -- Freshman Ed Hazboun scored two goals and Anthony Olive added the other as the Eagles blanked Bloomfield.
Jon Poponak recorded two assists and Olive one for JFK (9-3-1). Goalkeeper Brian Wolnik made six saves.
For Bloomfield (5-8-2), Josh Mobley made 15 saves.
Columbiana 6, Lordstown 0
COLUMBIANA -- Barry Kimpel had three goals and an assist, while goalkeepers David Cramer and Jeff Harold combined for the shutout.
Eric Birnesser added two goals and two assists and Eric Ostrander one goal for the Clippers (10-3-1). Also assisting on goals were Kyle Martin and Nate Walker.
Lordstown's record is 2-12.
Lakeview 1, Hubbard 0
HUBBARD -- David Beaumont scored an unassisted goal in the first half as the Bulldogs defeated Hubbard.
Lakeview goalkeeper Alex Koltsov made six saves. Hubbard's Aaron Severa had seven. Lakeview outshot the Eagles 14-13.
Heartland Christian 8, East Liverpool Christian 0
BOARDMAN -- Jordan Uhl, Blake Kozma and Mike Barborak each scored two goals in Heartland Christian's victory. Jeremy Stauffer and Aaron Shields added one each.
Goalie Cody Patterson made three saves for Heartland (9-3-1).
Girls
WARREN -- The Boardman High girls soccer team played Warren John F. Kennedy to a 1-1 tie.
Boardman (8-2-3) got on the board first when, in the ninth minute, Katie Stoil played a through-ball to Brittany Sirak, who dribbled toward the keeper and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
The teams battled evenly throughout the match, with Boardman registering 10 shots on goal to JFK's nine.
With nine minutes to go in the game, JFK freshman Lauren Perisa played the ball to sophomore Jen Natale, who spun and shot toward the near post, scoring from 15 yards.
Goalkeeper Aarika Knepp had 10 saves for JFK (6-3-4), while Liz Agnew had seven for Boardman.
Hubbard 3, Lakeview 2
HUBBARD -- Danielle DeJulio scored two goals for the Eagles, while Christina Adams added one on an assist from Megan May.
Kasey Baker scored both of the Bulldogs goals.
Hubbard had 18 shots on goal, compared to three for Lakeview.
