Crew 1, United 1
COLUMBUS -- Marco Etcheverry converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute Saturday as the D.C. United and Columbus Crew played to an overtime draw.
Etcheverry was fouled in the box by Crew defender Frankie Hejduk and put the penalty kick into the left side netting as goalkeeper Jon Busch dove right.
Hejduk stole a ball outside the United's penalty box to start the play that led to the Columbus' goal in the 19th minute by Ross Paule.
Hejduk passed to Kyle Martino, who sent a pass between three defenders to Paule, who slid a shot from the penalty spot past goalkeeper Clint Baumstark.
D.C.'s Bobby Convey nearly won the game with a minute remaining in overtime but his 18-yard shot just sailed over the crossbar.
Columbus has played three straight overtime games and is 0-3-8 in the extra session. The United, winless in Columbus since 2000, has eight ties this season, a new club record.
Columbus (8-11-8) started the game trailing New England by two points for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot and earned a point for the tie. The Crew has three regular season games remaining.
The United (10-9-8) entered third in the conference, six points ahead of the Columbus. The top four finishers in each conference qualify for the postseason.
