Hubbard man found dead
YOUNGSTOWN -- James Omarrah, 27, of Fairlawn Avenue, Hubbard, was found dead behind the wheel of a truck parked in the Speed Check parking lot on Albert Street about 5 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Police said they found evidence of drug abuse in the truck, including a syringe and suspected heroin. The cause of death will be determined by the Mahoning County coroner's office.
Chaney student shot
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christopher Eskew, 18, a Chaney High School student, was in stable condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center, recovering from a gunshot wound to his left hip.
Eskew was shot about 1 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Lora Avenue on the North Side. Witnesses told police that they and Eskew left a party on Lora and, as they walked down the street, saw five young men come from behind bushes at Lora and Juanita Avenue. The witnesses then heard 10 to 12 loud pops and the men ran.
Eskew is the son of city Patrolman Milton Eskew.
Armed robbery reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- More than $2,000 was taken during an armed robbery at Auto Zone on McCartney Road about 8 p.m. Saturday, reports show. The gunman locked the door after he entered and ordered employees to get behind the counter and lie on the floor. The manager was ordered to hand over money from the cash register and safe. The robber then fled.
Canfield Road vandalism
CANFIELD -- Someone tossed a landscaping stone through a large living room window at a house in the 4300 block of Canfield Road about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department. A deputy found that potted plants, flowers, landscaping stones and lights had been disturbed. Damage was estimated at $1,750.
Seminar about ponds
CANFIELD -- A free seminar for pond owners will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on state Route 46 across from the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Advice will be presented on pond construction, weed control, wildlife issues, stocking ponds with fish and other pond-related topics. The seminar is presented by Mahoning County Soil and Water Conservation District in cooperation with Mill Creek MetroParks.

Girl Scout recruitment
McDONALD -- Girl Scouts of Lake to River Council will hold its annual recruitment drive for McDonald at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Senior Citizen Room on the corner of Fifth and Ohio Avenues. Girls in grades K-12 who are interested in joining Girl Scouts, or adults who are interested in becoming leaders, are welcome to attend or to contact the council at (800) 362-9430.
Rabies vaccination clinics
The Mahoning County District Board of Health is offering rabies vaccination clinics for dogs, cats and ferrets. No appointment is necessary, but dogs must be under leash, and cats should be caged or carried in a cloth pillowcase.
The cost is $2 per shot.
The clinics are from 1 to 4 p.m.: Saturday, Struthers Police Department; Oct. 18, Berlin Fire Hall, state Routes 224 and 534; and Oct. 25, Angels for Animals, 4750 state Route 165, Beaver Township.
Grant Center program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reservations are being taken for "Getting Started with FC Search," a Grant Center program scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County's Main Library Meeting Room, 305 Wick Ave.
FC Search is the Foundation Center's Database on CD-ROM, available in the Grant Center, which is part of the Information Services Department at Main Library. Grant Center programs are free and open to representatives from nonprofit organizations seeking information on funding sources and fund raising.

East Side house burns
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at 3:49 a.m. today at 1425 Forestview Ave. on the East Side spread from the detached garage to the house, the fire department said.
Lt. Kevin Johnson of the arson bureau said he would inspect the damage today to determine the cause. The one-story frame house was occupied. There were no injuries reported. Damage was estimated at $10,000.
