YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State volleyball team (8-6, 1-2 Horizon League) snapped its 27-match Horizon League losing streak Friday after toppling Illinois-Chicago (7-11, 0-3 Horizon League) in five games, 34-32, 26-30, 26-30, 33-31, 15-11.
Seniors Annie Buschur and Colleen Royer and junior Melanie Pounders all contributed 17 kills, while Royer added a double-double with 11 digs. Buschur and Pounders finished the match with hitting percentages of .517 and .485, respectively, and Buschur added nine blocks.
Junior Lori Lyman added 10 kills and nine blocks, while freshman Cari Leslie collected a team-high 14 digs.
YSU hosts Loyola today at 2 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
Cross country
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Freshman Lisa Davies finished fourth with a time of 18:20 in the gold race Friday to lead the Youngstown State women's cross country team to a seventh-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational.
Tony Orcena led the men to a 17th-place finish in the blue division by finishing 69th with a time of 25:48.
With their effort, the women defeated Horizon League opponents UW-Green Bay, who finished 14th, and Wright State, who finished 17th.

Boardman's Morrowhonored by Federal
HARTVILLE -- Tim Morrow of Boardman High School was presented with the Federal League Player of the Year award following the Division I sectional golf tournament at Seven Hills Country Club.
Turocy, Wasser1-2 in skills contest
AUSTINTOWN -- Jared Turocy took first place and Andy Wasser was second in the 12-13 year old division during the Austintown Kiwanis Club's Football Skills Challenge contest.
The event at St. Anne's Church grounds was held in conjunction with the League of Champions, Let it Fly, 4 on 4 flag football tournament.
Scoring was determined based on accuracy and distance in the punt, pass and kicking skills.
Kyle Schuchler was first and Joe Wielbruda second in the 14-15 division; Sean McAllen won the 16-17 division, with Tom Peluso second; and Greg Mathes was first in the 18 division, with Paul Whorten second.
MVCA plansits fall social
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Coaches Association will hold its fall social Oct. 8 at the ITAM Club.
Tisha Hill, the Youngstown State University women's basketball coach, will be guest speaker for the event.

Ice Zone to hostannual Hockey Night
BOARDMAN -- Mother's Hope Foundation will sponsor its third annual Hockey Night on Oct. 11 at The Ice Zone, McClurg Road.
Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the game will begin at 7:30. Cost is $5, and tickets will be available at the door.
The Youngstown State University Penguins will be playing against area high school all stars from Boardman, Mooney, Ursuline and Poland.

Hunger Task Forceat Malone-Walsh game
CANTON -- Stark County Hunger Task Force donations will be accepted at the Malone College-Walsh College football game today at 2 p.m.
Student activities groups at each school will be collecting canned goods and other non-perishable food items at gate 3-4 and gate 7-8.
Collection boxes will be placed at the entrances and donations may be placed from 1-3 p.m.
Cavs' Wagnersidelined
CLEVELAND -- Dajuan Wagner's second season with the Cleveland Cavaliers is starting out a lot like his first.
The guard sat out of the Cavaliers' first full-team practice Friday because of swelling in his right knee. He is listed day to day.
Wagner, 20, was troubled by health problems throughout his rookie season as well.
He missed the preseason and the first 14 regular season games after he had surgery for a blood clot resulting from a bladder infection.
Wagner, who was Cleveland's No. 1 pick and the sixth overall selection in the 2002 draft, said the knee healed after the surgery but is sore again.
Rock-N-Roll Shootoutteams are selected
CLEVELAND -- Defending Big Ten champion Wisconsin will play Ohio University and perennial Mid-American Conference power Kent State will face St. Bonaventure in this year's Rock-N-Roll Shootout on Dec. 27 at Gund Arena.
The Badgers, who won a school record 24 games and advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA tournament last season, will meet the Bobcats in the second game of the doubleheader at 8:30 p.m.
Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan has four starters returning from last year's squad.
In the first game at 6 p.m., Kent State plays St. Bonaventure, rebuilding under first-year coach Anthony Solomon following the 2002 scandal that rocked the program and led to the firing of coach Jan van Breda Kolff and resignation of the school's president and athletic director.
