Moraine
Several autumn-related programs and events will be offered during October at Moraine State Park, near Portersville, Pa.
"Bird Bingo": Families with kids of all ages are invited to meet at 2 p.m. today at Pavilion No. 7 on the North Shore for this hourlong bingo game.
"Fall Nature Paddle": Participants are encouraged to bring a canoe or kayak to McDanel's Launch on the North Shore for an hourlong expedition to see the beginning of autumn colors along Lake Arthur. It starts at 6 p.m. Monday.
"Mushroom Walk": Gail Blakely, a retired schoolteacher, will discuss particular features to look for when identifying various wild mushrooms. Blakely has studied mycology, the study of fungi, for 30 years and will share her expertise. This program is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Davis Hollow Outdoor Center on the North Shore near the Davis Hollow Marina.
"Why Do Leaves Change"? A naturalist will meet at 2 p.m. next Sunday in the Pleasant Valley picnic area on the South Shore to discuss why leaves change color and what happens to leaves after they fall from the tree. This event will include a walk along part of the Pleasant Valley Trail to identify various trees common to the area.
"What's in a Pumpkin"? A naturalist will help participants discover what is inside a pumpkin, how it grows, how much one weighs and other facts, and their history will be explored. Meet at 1 p.m. Oct. 19 at Pavilion No. 7 at McDanel's Launch on the North Shore. Registration is required by Oct. 16 by calling (724) 368-3612.
