Judge sentences New York City man to prison in New Castle shooting

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A New York City man has been sentenced to 10 to 40 years in prison for his role in a New Year's Day shooting here.
Michael Malnar, 31, pleaded guilty Aug. 8 to aggravated assault, receiving stolen property, a felon in possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm in city limits.
Authorities said Malnar shot Torrence Respress, 33, of Moody Avenue in the legs in a Boyles Avenue home.
Police said Respress stumbled out of the home and across the street before another man shot him in the head.
Criminal homicide charges are pending against Willie Smith, 64, of Stein Road, Butler, the man accused of being the second shooter.
Malnar was given credit for serving 276 days awaiting sentencing.
Malnar had said he fired the gun in an effort to stop a fight between Respress and others at the Boyles Avenue home.
Police said Respress and Smith exchanged punches while arguing and Respress struggled with others.
