GATEWAY Quarterback Sambursky keeps Southern Illinois unbeaten

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Joel Sambursky passed for 173 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score Saturday to lead Southern Illinois to a 37-14 victory over Indiana State.
The Salukis (5-0, 1-0 Gateway Conference) forced four turnovers by the Sycamores (3-3, 0-1), including a fumble by Jake Shields on the first play of the game. Five plays later, Southern Illinois scored on the first of Sambursky's two TD passes to Chris Kupec.
Southern Illinois took a 23-0 lead with a 41-yard pass to Brent Little, a 1-yard run by Sambursky and a 32-yard field goal by Craig Coffin before Indiana State's Ryan King scored on a 29-yard pass from Jake Schiff with 13 seconds left in the first half.
A fumble by Kris Karagory on the ISU 4-yard line midway through the third quarter, set up another touchdown run by the Salukis' Courtney Abbott. The final touchdown came on a 15-yard pass from Sambursky to Kupec in the fourth quarter.
The only other score for Indiana State came late in the third quarter on a 17-yard run by Shields, who led all rushers with 127 yards.
Northern Iowa 16, Illinois State 7
NORMAL, Ill. -- Terrance Freeney's 4-yard run midway through the fourth quarter sealed the win for Northern Iowa.
Demetru Johnson scored on a 16-yard run in the second quarter for Illinois State (3-2), which led 7-0 through three quarters.
Northern Iowa (3-1) got going in the beginning of the fourth quarter when a snap went over punter Troy Maskel's head and out of the end zone for a safety.
Just over a minute later Brian Cutright caught a 58-yard pass from quarterback Tom Petrie. Then Northern Iowa went ahead 10-7 after a two-point conversion by Freeney.
On the Panthers next possession, Richard Carter ran for 47 yards before being stopped at Illinois State's 4-yard line. Freeney scored on the next play with 6:55 left in the game.
Northern Iowa rolled up 316 yards on the ground. Freeney carried 28 times for 172 yards and Carter had 15 carries to finish with 113 rushing yards.
Ohio Valley
MARTIN, Tenn. -- Brady Wahlberg scrambled for a 21-yard touchdown on the second play of overtime as Tennessee-Martin overcame a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Tennessee Tech, 30-23.
The victory snapped a 43-game conference losing streak by Tennessee-Martin (2-4, 1-1 Ohio Valley Conference) dating back to the final game of the 1996 season.
Tennessee Tech (2-3, 1-1) opened a 23-7 lead with two touchdowns by Derek White, who finished with 212 yards rushing on 12 carries including an 87-yard TD.
But Tennessee-Martin struck twice in the final six minutes to tie the game.
