AMERICAN LEAGUE Stewart keeps getting on base, but Twins still lose

Minnesota needs to win today to stay alive.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Shannon Stewart keeps getting on base for the Minnesota Twins. The hitters behind him just aren't coming through.
Stewart reached twice more from the leadoff spot Saturday, but Torii Hunter, Corey Koskie and the rest of the Twins were unable to knock him in.
Minnesota lost 3-1 to Roger Clemens and the New York Yankees, falling behind 2-1 in the best-of-five AL playoff series.
The middle of the Minnesota lineup is really struggling. Luis Rivas, Doug Mientkiewicz, Matthew LeCroy and Jacque Jones are a combined 4-for-42 in the series.
Hunter entered batting .500 in the series, but Clemens quickly took care of that. Hunter is 0-for-20 lifetime against the Rocket in the regular season, and he was hitless in three at-bats against Clemens on Saturday.
Stewart is 5-for-11 with two walks in the series, but he hasn't scored a run.
Time for action
The Twins have one last chance to find the offense that helped them clinch the AL Central title last month. They'll have to do it today against David Wells, another Yankees pitcher who's had success against Minnesota in his career.
The Twins haven't been opportunistic all series. And they couldn't take advantage of the few opportunities they had against a dominant Clemens.
Stewart drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, but Rivas flied out, Mientkiewicz grounded out and LeCroy struck out to erase any hopes Minnesota had of gaining an early lead.
The Twins got their first good chance to score in the fifth after Cristian Guzman and Stewart hit back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners with two outs.
Manager Ron Gardenhire tried to spark the offense by sending Michael Ryan, who had five homers last month after being recalled from Triple-A Rochester, up to pinch-hit for Rivas.
But Ryan's first at-bat against Clemens didn't last long; Clemens quickly got ahead 0-2 and struck out Ryan swinging.
Minnesota got another chance in the sixth when Mientkiewicz led off with a single and advanced to second when Bernie Williams bobbled the ball in center for an error.
But Clemens again kept his cool, getting LeCroy to ground out, striking out Jones and getting Hunter to ground out on the first pitch.
Minnesota couldn't manage a hit in the final three innings, two against closer Mariano Rivera.
