Alfredsson's 64 puts her in lead at Longs Drugs Challenge
LINCOLN, Calif. (AP) -- Helen Alfredsson tied the tournament record with an 8-under-par 64 Saturday to take the lead after three rounds of the Longs Drugs Challenge.
Alfredsson, who hasn't won an LPGA event since 1998, leads a group of four by one stroke with an 11-under 205 total at the Lincoln Hills Club.
Second-round leader Se Ri Pak shot a 71 after her 64 the previous day, putting her one shot back, along with Rachel Teske, Jung Yeon Lee and Pat Hurst, who all shot 66s.
Alfredsson has four career wins on the LPGA tour and has 14 international victories, but has experienced her worst year to date, making just $77,229 in 17 events. Her best finish has been 11th place.
"It's been a terrible year, I just haven't had that spark," Alfredsson said. "I haven't had that enthusiasm and fire this year. I haven't been into it."
But she got right in the hunt at this tournament on the outskirts of Sacramento with her best round of the year, and one stroke off her best score. Alfredsson enjoyed a bogey-free round with four birdies on each side. She finished the round by hitting a wedge into No. 18 and sinking a 7-footer for her final birdie.
The shot pulled her in front of Pak, who started the day a shot ahead of Sophie Gustafson (72).
"Helen is a great player," Teske said. "It's good to see her playing well. She hits it long and is fun to watch."
Pak won the tournament two years ago at Twelve Bridges Golf Club and is seeking her fourth victory of the season.
"I will go out and play aggressive," Pak said.
The most surprising name among the leaders was Lee, a second-year pro whose best finish was a fifth last year. She had six birdies, one eagle and two bogeys.
After a birdie on her first hole, Lee chipped in from 30 yards for an eagle at No. 2.
"Im pretty excited about tomorrow," Lee said. "I'll be a little nervous, but if not, I would be lying."
Teske, seeking her third victory of the season carded three birdies and eagled No. 15, shooting a 31 on the backside.
"I started so well on that back nine, I got real comfortable and gained momentum," Teske said.
