SOCCER Howland and Poland win in Metro Conference
Alliance and Niles played to a 2-2 tie.
HOWLAND -- Mike Maiorano scored the winning goal on an assist from Adam Phillips with 1 minute, 10 seconds remaining, as the Howland High boys soccer team defeated Canfield 2-1 Thursday.
The Cardinals (9-4, 7-3 Metro Athletic Conference) took a 1-0 lead early in the game on a goal by Mark Beezy.
Howland (9-2-3, 6-1-2) tied it on a goal by Marc Dunbar, with an assist from Malik Mohammad, with about 20 minutes remaining in the second half.
Tigers goalkeeper Zack Roscoe had five saves. Canfield goalie Andrew Turocy had nine saves.
Poland 2, Salem 0
SALEM -- Steve Gavolas put the Bulldogs (8-6, 6-4 MAC) ahead when he scored with 29:39 remaining in the first half.
With 1:10 to go, Dain Malaniak scored to make it 2-0.
Poland goalie John Aldan registered his fifth shutout of the season.
The Bulldogs outshot Salem 16-6 and had eight corner kicks to Salem's 1.
Niles 2, Alliance 2
NILES -- Tommy Clay and Nathan Mang each scored a goal for the Red Dragons in the first half.
Dustin Brown scored on two penalties in the second half for the Aviators (7-3-3, 5-2-3 MAC).
Alliance had 12 shots on goal, compared to seven for Niles.
Mooney 2, Hubbard 0
HUBBARD -- Zack Hernan's corner kicks led to both Mooney goals in the Cardinals' victory over Hubbard.
Jon Freaney converted off Hernan's kick early in the first half for a 1-0 lead.
With 10 minutes remaining, D.J. Myers took Hernan's corner kick and scored Mooney's second goal.
Mooney (13-0-1) stretched its unbeaten streak to 31 games as goalkeeper Jeff Seddon recorded his seventh shutout.
Hubbard (7-5-2) goalie Aaron Severa made nine saves.
Columbiana 2, Crestview 1
COLUMBIANA -- Kyle Martin scored the winning goal to keep the Clippers undefeated in the Tri-County League (4-0).
Barry Kimpel had the other goal for the Clippers (9-3-1), with assists by Eric Ostrander. David Cramer had 12 saves in goal.
Ken Wagenhouser scored the only goal for the Rebels (8-3-2, 3-2-1).
Girls
GIRARD -- Sarah Christner paced Lakeview with two goals and Kasey Baker added one more in a 3-2 victory over Girard. Jen Baker had an assist.
Gina Bianco and Krista Kirkpatrick led the Indians with a goal apiece.
Wilmington 2, Warren JFK 1
WARREN -- Lexie Polivka scored a goal on an assist from Abbey Ross in the first half to give the Eagles (6-3-3) a 1-0 lead.
The Greyhounds then answered with two goals from Sarah Bretz, also in the first half.
Aarika Knapp had six saves for the Eagles, who outshot the Greyhounds 19-8.
