RAY SWANSON | Keystoner Early surprises in Mercer County football contests

You can talk all you want about parity in the NFL these days, however, the balance of power in Mercer County football this season has taken its course, too.
A couple of real shockers over the past several weeks have sent out some real smoke signals. For instance, Mercer's 14-7 win over Sharon, and Slippery Rock's convincing 47-6 conquest over Greenville in a battle of unbeatens. Slippery Rock is Class AA, Greenville AAA.
I may be wrong, but I can't even remember a Mercer football team defeating Sharon. And I can't ever remember Greenville taking such a shelling. I guess that parity thing has taken command and you can look forward to a number of shockers to take place in the weeks ahead.
Mercer is operating under coach Gary Krenzer while the Rockets are led by Clyde Conti.
One thing about this parity thing, one can attend the contest of his choosing each week and never be certain of the final outcome.
Assistant coaches
Westminster College has hired a half-dozen athletic assistants for the 2003-04 school year. Each will serve as an assistant for their respective sport.
Ashley Pyle (Quaker Valley High School) is beginning her second year as an athletic assistant with the Westminster women's soccer program.
Eric Golz (Wadsworth High School) is in his first year working with the Titan men's soccer program.
Pat Vereb (Mohawk High School) and Tim Widdowfield (New Galilee Mohawk High School) are each in their first season as athletic assistants with the Titan football program. Vereb is a 2003 Westminster graduate who was a three-year member of the Titan team as a linebacker. Widdowfield is a 203 graduate of Robert Morris where he worked as a manager of the football team.
Ben O'Connor (Keystone Oaks High School) is in his first year working with the Titan men's basketball team. He was a three-year member of the Titan basketball team before transferring to Duquesne University.
Josh Curekovich (Tyrone High School) is beginning his first season as an athletic assistant with the Westminster men's and women's swimming programs. He is a 1999 Westminster graduate who was a four-year member of the Titan swim team, earning All-America honors and twice qualifying for the national meet.
Pyle was a four-year letter winner for the Titan women's soccer team and is the all-time leading scorer in school history with 80 goals, 39 assists and 199 points.
Second guessing
Wonder why Cleveland Browns' coach Butch Davis did not replace his starting quarterback Kelly Holcomb, when the later injured his leg in the game against the San Francisco 49ers. Holcomb went the distance as he directed the Browns to a come-from-behind victory.
Davis has a multi-million dollar quarterback sitting on the sidelines in Tim Couch who could have replaced Holcomb and prevented Kelly from further injury.
It appears that Davis no longer has any faith in his former signal caller what-so-ever.
