FRANKLIN, Pa. -- Seraphim Choir from Youngstown will perform Verdi's dramatic opera "Il Trovatore" at 7 p.m. Friday in Franklin High School auditorium. Jon Simsic will conduct Seraphim members as well as Valley Lyric Opera Orchestra. Special guest will be Samuel DePalma, who has performed at Metropolitan Opera House and for various heads of state. Orchestra schedules gala
WARREN -- Warren Philharmonic Orchestra will open the 2003-04 season by presenting a gala concert and reception at 8 p.m. Saturday in Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St.
The event will honor Dr. David A. Allen Jr., former dean of Kent State University Trumbull Campus, for myriad contributions to the Mahoning Valley and to acknowledge his efforts in support of the cultural life in the area through his commitment to the orchestra.
The program will include an appearance by Halim El-Dabh, KSU emeritus professor, who will perform several of his piano compositions from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m.

Program on Indians
CORTLAND -- "The Indians Who Lived in Our Area" will be presented by David Carbaugh, a Youngstown State University instructor, at 10 a.m. Oct. 14 at Viets Museum, 224 N. High St.
Carbaugh, who was adopted by the Senecas, will discuss American Indian customs and living conditions and display artifacts.

Director's special
SALEM -- Salem Community Theatre has added "Sandbag, Stage Left, or One Dead Dolly" as a director's special to its list of scheduled productions.
The comic murder mystery revolves around the untimely death of a play's leading lady, who is squashed by a sandbag during a performance. When the whodunit is finally solved, members of the audience will be asked to serve as a jury and to determine the fate of the culprit.
Performances will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 19. Tickets are $10 for adults and seniors and $7 for those 17 and under. Call (330) 332-9688.
The Vogues in concert
EAST LIVERPOOL -- A concert featuring The Vogues will be presented by the Westgate Culture Club Nov. 21 at Westgate Auditorium. The event will begin with an opening act at 7 p.m., and the vocal group will take the stage at 7:30.
