Guard units deployed
NEWTON FALLS -- About 150 members of the Ohio National Guard's 1-107th Armor Battalion, including Company A in Newton Falls, have been deployed to the U.S. Central Command Area of Operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Their exact destination was not announced. A send-off ceremony was Thursday at Warrensville Heights High School.
Other units involved in the 107th deployment include Company B of Highland Hills; and Company C and Headquarters Company, both of Stow, ONG spokesman James A. Sims said.
The 107th will serve with the 30th Brigade from the North Carolina National Guard. Once in the Middle East, their primary mission will be to conduct security and stability operations.
Woman is beaten
WARREN -- A 25-year-old Hazelwood Avenue S.E. woman told police that five family members beat her and left her by a trash bin. Brandy Kren told police that around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday several family members beat her with household objects, drove her to a local park, pushed her out of the car near a trash bin and left. She was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. One family member, Arthur O. Horne, 29, of Hazelwood, was arrested on a felonious assault charge.
Bar association officers
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Bar Association named new officers. Magistrate Deborah E. Marik is president, and Atty. Daniel G. Keating, vice-president. Judge Pamela A. Rintala was named secretary, and Atty. Mark E. Bumstead is the new treasurer. Awards were given to 25- and 50-year members of the bar. Those recognized for 50 years were, Atty. Bruce Birrell, Atty. Robert J. Boyd, Atty. David F. McLain, Judge Robert A. Nader and Atty. Paul G. Nader. Judge Robert A. Nader and Judge Lynn B. Griffith Jr. were also given awards for distinguished service to the legal profession.
Girl Scout recruitment
McDONALD -- Girl Scouts of Lake to River Council will hold its annual recruitment drive for McDonald at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Senior Citizen Room on the corner of Fifth and Ohio Avenues. Girls in grades K-12 who are interested in joining Girl Scouts, or adults who are interested in becoming leaders, are welcome to attend or to contact the council at (800) 362-9430.
'Older Women's Rights'
NILES -- The McKinley Memorial Library, 40 N. Main St., will host Ohio writer Maryanne E. Hoffman, author of "Older Women's Rights." Hoffman will speak from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 13 on a variety of topics from her book, including secrets to longevity, how nutritious diets can prevent cancer and osteoporosis and why home health care may be the best answer. Audience members will have a chance to buy signed copies of Hoffman's book after the lecture. The program is free, and no registration is needed. For information, call Patrick E. College Night at mall
NILES -- The Eastwood Mall Complex will host College Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Center Court. Students can meet with admissions officers from more than 75 colleges and universities. A free financial aid seminar will take place at 5:30 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. upstairs in the Eastwood Mall Community Room. The event is presented by the Industrial Information Institute for Education Inc., Forum Health, Kent State University-Trumbull Campus, Trumbull Regional Educational Service Center and the Trumbull County Career Development Program.
Sports card show

Robberies at bars
NILES -- Police are investigating reports of robberies at two bars.
A North Cedar Street man told police that he pulled into the parking lot of DJ's Lounge, Federal Street, about 10:45 p.m. Thursday when a car containing two men pulled up beside him, they jumped out, and robbed him at gunpoint of $120.
An employee at Punchski's Bar, Pratt Street, told police that a man came in about 2:10 a.m. Friday, grabbed a customer by the throat and held a knife to her neck, demanding money. The employee gave him the money from the register and the man left.
