WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Youngstown State missed a penalty shot and several key chances to convert for shots on goal, as Howard University defeated the Penguins 3-2 Wednesday.
After a scoreless first half, YSU junior Diane Fellabaum scored unassisted at 51:11.
Howard's Samantha Romantini tied the score at 67:41 on a penalty kick, then Ranieka Bean gave the Bison its first lead of the game at 72:49.
YSU sophomore Jessica Yarter scored her fifth goal of the season at 77:03.
Bean scored her second goal at 82:34 to give the Bison (2-3) the victory. YSU is 1-9.

Phantoms win
TOLEDO -- A goal by Tommy Kolar 26 seconds into overtime lifted the Youngstown Phantoms to a 3-2 victory over the Toledo Ice Diggers in a North American Hockey League game Wednesday.
The win was the third straight for the Phantoms (3-1-1).
Youngstown trailed 2-0 after two periods, but tied the score on goals by Rob Rassey at 4:19 and Carson Strang at 13:44 of the third period. Rassey assisted on the Strang goal, which was on a power play, as well as Kolar's game-winner.
Tyler Sims stopped 29 shots in goal for Youngstown.
The Phantoms play host to the Cleveland Barons Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at The Ice Zone.
Hockey gameat Ice Zone
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Toledo Wolf Pack will meet the New Jersey Metro Fighting Moose at the Ice Zone on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Former players from the Phantom Rockets have joined with other former CEHL players to form the Wolf Pack.

Lake Erie endslong losing streak
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Freshman Pam Mackos scored on a goal from Stevi Culverwell in the 23rd minute to put Lake Erie College ahead, 1-0, as the Storm ended a 27-game losing streak with a 1-1 tie at Medaille College in women's soccer recently.
The goal by Mackos, a former Ursuline High player, was Lake Erie's first goal of the season. A week later, Mackos assisted on Culverwell's goal as the Storm beat Bluffton, 1-0, for its first victory in two seasons.
Mackos is the daughter of Joe and Dee Mackos of Youngstown.

Pirates claim Boyd
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-handed pitcher Jason Boyd off waivers from the Cleveland Indians.
Boyd, 30, spent the majority of the 2003 season with Cleveland and went 3-1 with a 4.30 ERA in 44 relief appearances. He began the season with Buffalo and was 1-0 with three saves and a 1.23 ERA.
MAC invites UCF
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Mid-American Conference extended an invitation of full membership to Central Florida Wednesday.
The invitation would become effective if the Big East Conference's planned expansion does not include any MAC schools.
The Golden Knights joined the MAC as a football-only member last season.

Limbaugh quits
NEW YORK -- Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh resigned from ESPN, three days after sparking outrage by saying Philadelphia Eagles star Donovan McNabb is overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.
Earlier, Democratic presidential candidates Wesley Clark, Howard Dean and Rev. Al Sharpton called for the cable sports network to fire Limbaugh.
Snyder remainsunconscious
ATLANTA -- Two days after a car accident, Atlanta Thrashers center Dan Snyder remained unconscious and in critical condition at Grady Hospital. Dany Heatley, who was driving the car Monday night, was at the same hospital being treated for less serious injuries.
Heatley, charged with a felony, already had posted a $50,000 bond, set during a hearing involving a prosecutor and Heatley's attorney.
Garnett signs
MINNEAPOLIS -- All-Star forward Kevin Garnett signed a five-year contract extension with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Garnett will make an NBA-high $28 million this season, the final installment of the record six-year, $126 million deal he signed in 1997.
Stoudamire returns
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Trail Blazers guard Damon Stoudamire was reinstated to the team, having served a nearly three-month suspension for his arrest on drug charges.
FSU and Hokiesget best deals
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Florida State and Atlantic Coast Conference newcomer Virginia Tech seemed to get the best deals in the next two football schedules.
The Seminoles and Hokies both drew games against Miami in the 2004 and 2005 seasons, but were spared a head-to-head matchup. Four other schools will play all three of the conference's powerhouses in each of the next two seasons.
