TENNIS Four top singles still alive in sectional play



Quarterfinal matches continue today, semifinals and finals on Saturday.
BOARDMAN -- The top four seeded singles players remained alive in the Division II girls sectional tennis tournament after play Wednesday at Boardman High School.
Kim Ezzo of Ursuline, Erin Bennett of Poland, Ashley Hoff of Liberty and Emily Berry of Struthers make up half of the field still alive for district berths.
The top four singles players and top four doubles teams advance to district competition next week.
Ezzo and Poland's Samantha Stanich, advancing through the field after first-round byes, will play each other in the semifinals Saturday.
Ezzo defeated Michelina Vitello of Brookfield, 6-1, 6-0, and Trista Houck of United, 6-1, 6-1. Stanich defeated Christina Guarnieri of Warren JFK, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4, and Abby Hoag of Ashtabula Edgewood, 6-1, 6-1.
The other top three seeds will play quarterfinal matches today -- Bennett against Salem's Megan Goll; Hoff against Ravenna's Brooke Buller; and Berry against Warren JFK's Hilary Rossi.
Bennett defeated Niles' Samantha Kerr, 6-0, 6-0, and Warren JFK's Faith Millik, 6-0, 6-2. Goll stopped West Branch's Jessica Schuster, 6-0, 6-0, and Brookfield's April Scudere, 6-1, 6-1.
Hoff advanced after wins against Jefferson's Jennica Saddler, 6-0, 6-0, and Edgewood's Andrea Essig, 6-3, 6-0.
Berry defeated United's Megan McCartney, 6-2, 6-0, and McDonald's Brittany Taylor, 6-1, 6-0. Rossi defeated Lakeview's Katie Petrosky, 6-0, 6-0; Jefferson's Heather Hambleton, 6-3, 6-0, and Poland's Kara Butch, 6-2, 6-4.
Doubles
In doubles, three of the four seeds moved on to Saturday's semifinals.
Top-seeded Rebecca Brocker and Britini Brocker of Cardinal Mooney will face fourth-seeded Liz Rothenberg and Samantha Gett of Poland.
Second-seeded Lisa Fedina and Ana Lungu of Ursuline will play unseeded Heather Victor and Ashley Victor of Ashtabula Edgewood.
Victor-Victor eliminated Ashley Kelly and Barbara McDonald, the third-seeded team from West Branch.
Results
Brocker-Brocker defeated Haley Cappa-Ashley Sweitzer of West Branch, 6-2, 6-0; Liz Strasfeld-Natalle Weiss of Liberty, 6-0, 6-0, and Maribeth Hissom-Danielle Ramus of United, 6-0, 6-0.
Rothenberg-Gett advanced by defeating Elin Wickstrom-Heather Sharp of Edgewood, 6-1, 7-6; Holly Bennett-Annie Dombroski of Salem, 6-0, 6-3, and Allison Ginnetti-Bridget Gates of Struthers, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Fedina-Lungu moved on after stopping Heather Dewell-Melissa Doran of East Palestine, 6-0, 6-0; Alyssa Mootz-Rachel Ballas of Liberty, 6-3, 7-6, and Lisa Hsieh-Candace Covelli of Warren JFK, 6-2, 6-4.
Division I
Renee Lesnett and Rachel McGowan of Canfield advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals of the sectional singles tournament at Massillon Jackson High.
Lesnett, the second seed, defeated Evanne Armour of Uniontown Lake, 6-0, 6-0, and Kristen Gibbs of North Canton Hoover, 6-1, 6-0, and next will face Jackson's Claire Bing.
McGowan, the third seed, defeated Abigail Hurley of Marlington, 6-0, 6-0, and Monica Prasnal of Hoover, 6-0, 6-0, and next will face Megan Stoll of Jackson.
Canfield's Krystle Hively and Cardinals doubles teams of Caryn Kovach-Jillian Nard and Nikki Camardo-Ashley Nord were eliminated.
