PREP SOCCER Flashes nearing TAC boys crown



After beating Lakeview 5-1, Champion is one win away from the title.
CORTLAND -- The Champion High boys soccer team moved within one win of the Trumbull Athletic Conference title by defeating Lakeview 5-1 Wednesday.
Zach Gumont scored two goals, and John Emery, Mike Harrison and Adam Lantz added one apiece for the Golden Flashes (13-1, 8-1), who can secure the TAC with a victory against Newton Falls on Monday.
Harrison assisted twice on goals, and goalie Jason Black made four saves for Champion, which is ranked sixth in the state in Division III.
Kevin Copenhaver scored Lakeview's goal.
Mathews 11, Chaney 1
VIENNA -- Jake Day scored four goals for the Mustangs (3-8-3).
Brent McLaughlin and Dan Graora each had two goals, while Tyler Stanton, Sean Kail and Craig Schrechngost each had a tally for Mathews.
Eric Sheffield scored in the second half for the Cowboys.
Maplewood 0, Badger 0
CORTLAND -- Dustin Slusher made 18 saves in goal for Maplewood (7-2-3), while Josh Gilliland had eight for the Braves (10-2-3).
Girls
STRUTHERS -- Katie Frank, Jessica Kausits and Geyalyn Tondo-Steele each scored goals as Ursuline defeated Warren Harding 3-1.
The Irish (6-6-1, 2-2) had more shots, 29-7, and led 1-0 at the break.
Alex Tatebe scored off an assist from Chrisi Gorgiages for Harding (3-6-2, 0-3).
Fitch 7, Canton GlenOak 0
AUSTINTOWN -- Jodi Bowlen had three goals and two assists as the Falcons routed GlenOak in a Federal League game.
Brittney Getz added two goals, while Kelly Croysdale and Dina Harris had one each.
Recording assists for Fitch were Danielle Storey, Getz, Croysdale and Harris.
Goalies Kristi Brendlinger and Cara Calai combined for nine saves for the Falcons (9-3-2, 4-1-1).
GlenOak is 4-7-3, 2-4.
Poland 13, Salem 0
POLAND -- Britt Davis scored three goals, while Krista Ginnetti and Colleen Moran added two each as the Bulldogs (10-2-2, 8-1) routed Salem (2-7-4) in the Metro Athletic Conference.
Poland also got one goal each by Jessie Toth, Allyson Holsinger, Laura Hassay, Liz Rothenberg, Emily Sutcliffe, and Maureen Malone.
Badger 5, Pymatuning Valley 0
ANDOVER -- Tessa Bonar scored three goals to lead the Braves past Py Valley.
Cayla Arnold and Jen Fitch added goals for Badger (10-3-1), which outshot Py Valley 24-3.
Hannah Miller, Arnold and Fitch had assists.
Liz Smith made three saves in goal for the Braves.
West Branch 1, Marlington 1
BELOIT -- McKenzie Wallace scored from about 30 yards out to put the Warriors in front 1-0 in the first half, but Marlington (6-6-1) tied the score with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Carlie Poffenberger made 10 saves for the Warriors (9-0-5).
