SHARON, Pa. -- The apparent low bids for the demolition of three dilapidated commercial buildings at 200-212 E. State St. came in well within budget Thursday. The city is using federal a Community Development Block Grant to tear them down and put in a parking lot and had estimated demolition about $150,000. Demolition contracts will be awarded at a special city council meeting Tuesday. The lowest bids are: asbestos removal, Air Technology Inc. of Bethel Park, Pa., $51,800; building removal, Terreri Construction Co. Inc. of North Jackson, Ohio, $78,900.
VFW men's auxiliary
WASHINGTONVILLE -- VFW Post 5532 is having an organizational meeting for a men's auxiliary at 11 a.m. Saturday at the post home, 575 S. County Road. Membership is limited to husbands, widowers, fathers, grandfathers, sons, grandsons, brothers and half-brothers, 16 years of age or older, of people who were or are eligible for VFW membership. Twenty-five members are required to obtain a charter from the Ohio VFW.
8 at-risk youths to visit U.S. Air Force Museum
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eight Mahoning County youths will visit the U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton on Sunday as part of the Beight Farm's aviation program. The one-day trip is funded through a $5,000 grant from the Cleveland Browns Foundation.
The Beight Farm, a nonprofit corporation in New Middletown, provides services for at-risk youths, including summer camps, a farming and gardening program, and the aviation program.
The aviation program, started in 1994 by Atty. Douglas B. Taylor of New Middletown, includes a short, introductory ground course on flying, and short, local plane rides. It culminates in a weekend trip to places like Michigan, Wisconsin or the Air Force Museum. The program is staffed by volunteer pilots.
Jared Box service project
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Student leaders from 35 colleges and universities gathered today at Slippery Rock University to assemble "Jared Boxes" for sick children as part of the three-day Lambda Sigma Society's annual national convention, hosted by the university. Lambda Sigma is an honor society for college sophomores. The Jared Box service project will send shoe boxes of toys and games to children undergoing chemotherapy or other treatments throughout the region, dropped off at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The campaign honors a 5-year-old Pennsylvania boy who died of cancer in 2000.
Application deadline
YOUNGSTOWN -- The deadline for area residents who suffered property damage from summer storms to apply for financial assistance from the federal government has been extended until Tuesday. The original deadline was Sept. 30. Walter Duzzny, Mahoning County emergency management agency director, said the assistance is for people who sustained damage between July 21 and Aug. 25 because of flooding and a tornado. Individuals who have yet to file a claim for financial assistance should call the Federal Emergency Management Agency at (800) 621-3362 to register a claim.
Motorcycle club's chili run
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Blue Knights Ohio XXIV law enforcement motorcycle club will hold a chili run Saturday to benefit the Special Olympics programs of Columbiana and Mahoning counties. The ride will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Red Diamonds Uniforms, 4437 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, and end at Headpin Lanes bowling alley, 503 Mulberry St., East Liverpool. Registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the starting point. The cost to enter the ride is $10 per rider and $10 per passenger. All legal riders are welcome to participate.
County plan moves on
YOUNGSTOWN -- A plan to add Mahoning, Trumbull, Ashtabula and Fayette counties to the Appalachian Regional Commission took another step forward. The U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure approved a bill adding the four counties to the commission by voice vote Wednesday. The bill now moves to the House floor. Joining the commission could make the counties eligible for millions in federal aid. The commission provides money to distressed communities in the Appalachian Mountain region. The commission includes 410 counties in 13 states, including Columbiana County in Ohio, and Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania.
