CANFIELD -- Whitney Zunic's goal at 24:33 of the second half lifted the Canfield High girls soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Cardinal Mooney Saturday at Canfield High.
"This is a big win for us," Canfield coach Jon Ulicney said. "Our record really doesn't reflect our season. We've played some tough games this season, but this squad has showed plenty of fight and heart. They never give up and today they showed plenty of heart."
With the win, Canfield improved to 4-7-3 overall while breaking a three-game losing streak. Mooney, 7-5-1, had a four-game winning streak snapped.
"We were flat, it's as simple as that," Mooney coach Alex Simon said. "We just didn't come to play. We failed to execute offensively in both halves and that was our biggest problem."
The first 40 minutes was uneventful, with Canfield forging a 9-4 shots-on-goal advantage. Mooney's best opportunity came at 21:32 when Kelli Willis' shot went wide right of an open net. At the other end, Canfield's Breanne Democko and two shots by Zunic were rejected by goalie Natalie Humphreys.
"Natalie Humphreys was exceptional for us in goal today," Simon said. "She is just a sophomore and seems to improve each and every time out."
Marissa Simon's goal, with an assist from Colleen Zajac, gave Mooney a 1-0 advantage just 2:42 into the second half.
Making the difference
When Kathryn Fehr assisted on Nicole Sorice's goal at 33:11, Canfield knotted the game at a goal apiece. Callie Carrera then found Zunic for the game-winning goal.
"Callie Carrera was our goalkeeper until two games ago," Ulicney said. "We moved her to center/forward and it really pleases me that she has made the commitment to that position.
"Give goalie Megan Garland credit, as well," Ulicney said. "She volunteered to go in goal for us and has done a terrific job. She stays calm all of the time."
Canfield held an 18-8 shots-on-goal advantage, outshooting Mooney 9-4 in both halves.
