PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP Newton Falls wins on Martin's goal
Her goal broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second half of play.
LIBERTY -- Heather Martin scored the winning goal as the Newton Falls High girls soccer team defeated Liberty 2-1 Monday in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Martin found the net midway through the second half for the Tigers (6-4-4).
The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in the first half on goals by Casee Piquet for Newton Falls and Brittny Humphrey for the Leopards (4-8-1).
The score by Humphrey was the 99th career goal for the senior midfielder. Humphrey will try to reach the 100-goal mark Thursday in a home game against Bristol at 5 p.m.
The defensive game featured strong efforts in goal by the Tigers' Grace Spletzer and Liberty's Brianne Hadig.
Mooney 4, Ursuline 2
STRUTHERS -- Two goals from Nomiki Frangopoulos helped lead the Cardinals (7-4-1, 3-0 Steel Valley Conference).
Kelli Willis and Marisa Simon also registered goals for the Cardinals, while Kelly Burke, Tina Sheridan and Colleen Zajac provided assists.
Ursuline (5-6-1, 1-2) scored goals late in both halves through Jessica Kausits and Cierra Bennett.
Mooney goalkeepers Natalie Humphreys and Veronica Skowron combined to make nine saves.
Poland 6, Canfield 1
POLAND -- Krista Ginnetti led the Bulldogs (9-2-2, 7-1 Metro Athletic Conference) with two goals and one assist. Sarah Anderson and Jessie Toth each had a goal and an assist. Other goals for Poland were made by Britt Davis and Colleen Moran. Maureen Malone also had an assist for Poland.
Canfield (6-5-1) scored its goal on a penalty kick by Tia Norris.
Boys
AUSTINTOWN -- Jared VanArsdale scored four goals and Kory Cooper added three goals and three assists to lead Youngstown Christian to a 10-2 victory over Victory Christian.
David Verzilli, Jamie Moker and Sal Mineo added goals for Youngstown Christian (4-1), and goalie Joey Suszczynski stopped six shots.
Akron Ellet 6, Columbiana 2
COLUMBIANA -- Barry Kimple and Eric Birnesser scored for the Clippers (8-3-1).
