SEBRING -- Smith Township police have identified a man struck and killed by a train near the Johnson Road crossing as Mark Richmond, 29, of Sebring. Police think Richmond was living with a sister on East Ohio Avenue here. Smith Township police Detective Terry Rockwell said a Norfolk-Southern railway official contacted police around 7:42 p.m. Monday to report the westbound train had struck someone. Police found Richmond's body along the tracks about 300 yards west of the Johnson Road crossing. Railway officials said the train could not be stopped in time to avoid striking Richmond. The conductor told police Richmond was walking west along the tracks, turned to face the train, put his fists to his head and knelt on the tracks. The Mahoning County coroner's office and Norfolk-Southern police are investigating.
Wife charged with assault
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- It's meant to keep your car safe, but police say a Pittsburgh woman tried to use The Club vehicle anti-theft device to settle an argument with her spouse. Pennsylvania State Police said Sherry Cobbs, 40, was arrested after she struck her husband, Maurice Watson, 36, on the head with a Club when they got into an argument driving north on Interstate 79 in Springfield Township a week ago. Watson had his wife charged with simple assault and harassment, police said.
Judicial candidates tour
SHARON, Pa. -- Four Democratic state judicial candidates are scheduled to be in Mercer County on Thursday as part of a statewide election tour. All are endorsed by the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO central labor councils and local unions. Judge Max Baer, candidate for Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and judges John Driscoll, Seamus McCaffery and Jack Panella, all candidates for Pennsylvania Superior Court, will attend a luncheon at noon at the Rosemont Banquet and Conference Center, 200 Sterling Ave.
Garage damaged in fire
SALEM -- A single-car garage was damaged in an early morning blaze.
The fire department responded around 2:25 a.m. today to a fire at the home of Cindy Coleman, 606 Olive St. The wooden garage is detached from the house and did not have a car in it. Cause of the fire is undetermined. Loss has been set at $20,000.
Motorist dies in crash
HUBBARD -- A Pennsylvania man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning in a residential neighborhood.
Armond Lometrious Holloway, 33, of Farrell was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Caroline Avenue near School Street around 10:30 a.m. Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle, went left of center and struck a utility pole, police said.
Holloway was pronounced dead at the scene. Police continue to investigate.
How to save home energy
SANDY LAKE, Pa. -- The McKeever Environmental Learning Center and the state Department of Environmental Protection are offering a free public program on ways to save energy in the home. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the center's Roy Wilt Auditorium at 55 McKeever Lane. There will be five segments dealing with heating, insulation, windows, lighting and stoves/firewood. There will also be information on home energy audits and Mercer County's Weatherization Program.
Intersection reopens
CANFIELD -- The intersection of Shields and Raccoon roads has reopened after being closed for addition of left-turn lanes and a new traffic signal.
The $692,000 U.S. Route 62 improvement project was completed almost two weeks ahead of schedule, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.
Counterfeit bill seized
AUSTINTOWN -- Police confiscated a counterfeit $20 bill after a customer attempted to use the phony money to pay for a food order at Wendy's, 52 Interstate Blvd., on Sunday. According to a police report, employees at the restaurant told police that the same customer had used a counterfeit bill to pay for an order placed at the drive-through the night before.
