NBA Youthful Cavs open practice

LeBron James will be in the spotlight as the Cavs' training camp opens today.
COMBINED DISPATCHES
CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers were scheduled to open training camp today with all eyes on LeBron James.
The No. 1 overall draft pick and 12 other members of the Cavaliers with less than four years of NBA experience were required to report Monday for physical examinations -- all passed.
James and the other young players were to have their first practice at 9 a.m. today. Because of James, the club is bracing for a huge media contingent during the first week of twice daily workouts.
Of the 18 players on the Cavaliers' training camp roster, only five have more than four years of NBA experience.
The veterans are required to report on Thursday.
At 18 years old, James is the youngest member of the Cavaliers followed by 20-year-old, second-year guard Dajuan Wagner.
Other new faces
Along with James and second-round draft pick Jason Kapono, the other new faces at camp include four unsigned players: guards Chris Carr and Tito Maddox and forwards Tony Farmer and Geoff Owens.
The Cavaliers will spend their first week practicing at Gund Arena before opening their pre-season schedule Oct. 7 at Detroit.
The team will have an intra-squad scrimmage Oct. 11 at Kent State and their first home pre-season game Oct. 13 against Milwaukee.
About 200,000 individual tickets for the Cavaliers' 41 home games go on sale Saturday with a preview sale of 16,000 $10 tickets Friday.
For the first time, the Cavaliers will be using a wristband lottery system for fans purchasing tickets this weekend at Gund Arena.
"We're not fully sure what to expect," said Len Komoroski, president of the Cavaliers/Gund Arena Co. "This is somewhat unprecedented for us."
McCoy expected to sign
The Cavaliers are expected to sign center Jelani McCoy before Thursday.
McCoy, a 6-10 center, has five years of NBA experience, playing three years in Seattle, one with the Lakers and last season with the Raptors.
He was originally drafted by the Sonics in the second round in 1998 and has averaged 4.9 points and 3.7 rebounds over 242 games in his career.
He averaged 6.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in 67 games with 25 starts for the Raptors last year after making the team out of training camp. He won an NBA championship ring with the Lakers in 2002, though he played just 21 games and was left off the playoff roster.
The Cavaliers already have five centers on their roster, but McCoy will likely compete with Bruno Sundov and non-roster invitee Geoff Owens for a spot on the team.
