LIBERTY -- Liberty High's Brittny Humphrey still managed a smile following the Leopards' 6-2 loss to Bristol in a girls soccer game Thursday.
Despite the loss, Humphrey scored her 100th career goal late in the first half. She later tallied her 101st goal midway through the second half.
Humphrey's effort wasn't enough to overcome another stellar performance by Bristol senior Amber Rasmussen.
Rasmussen scored all six goals for the Panthers (9-5), including four in the first half, which enabled Bristol's defenders to concentrate on stopping Humphrey.
"It felt good," Humphrey said of reaching the scoring milestone. "But it would have felt better if we would have won.
"I've been waiting for this all four years, so I'm very happy to finally make my 100th goal."
Scored on seventh shot
Humphrey did her best to try to get Liberty on the scoreboard early and offset the offensive outburst by Rasmussen.
Humphrey worked her way through the Panther defense to pepper six solid shots at the Bristol goal in the first half. Her seventh shot finally found the back of the net.
"Our keeper did an outstanding job in the first half," Bristol coach Larry Perris said of sophomore Kylie Robertson. "Without her effort, Brittny would have had her 100th goal a lot sooner.
"I thought our defense played pretty well, in general," he added. "Brittny's an exceptional athlete."
While Robertson was keeping Humphrey and her Liberty teammates in check, Rasmussen was busy at the other end of the field adding to her own career scoring mark.
The senior has scored 118 goals in her career at Bristol.
"Amber just does what we need her to do," Perris said. "It's always a team effort, but her job is to score goals and she does it very well."
Mutual respect
Humphrey and Rasmussen are no strangers on the soccer field.
"I've played with and against her for a long time," Humphrey said. "She's a great competitor and she had an awesome game tonight."
Liberty coach Jeff Rebraca believes his senior means just as much to his team.
"I wouldn't trade Brittny for anyone," Rebraca said. "She's meant so much to this program and she's the greatest kid."
Humphrey, an A-student, also plays basketball for the Leopards and was a member of Liberty's two state relay championship teams last spring.
