YOUNGSTOWN A-Plus Fami
The PWBA Northeast Region event is coming after several years' absence.
YOUNGSTOWN -- After several years' absence, A-Plus Family Bowl will be the site of a Professional Women's Bowling Association Northeast Region event.
A-Plus has had women-only and male-female combinations before, but, this time, it's a ladies and senior men (50-over) mixed doubles tournament.
The weekend of Oct. 24 begins with a "free admission to the public" practice session for the pros and guests entered in the main event. It starts with at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by another squad at 2 p.m. After qualifying, the top 16 doubles teams will advance to a series of matches to begin Oct. 26 at 8:30 a.m.
Bowl with the best
On Friday, at 6 and 8 p.m., and at 7 p.m. Saturday, the public will have a chance to bowl with the best in the Northeast in a 9-pin no-tap tournament.
Amateurs' scores will be matched with three different pro doubles partners for the chance to win cash prizes. Youth bowlers will compete for trophies.
Entry fee for the pro-am is $40 for adults and $25 for youth bowlers.
Also, the latest bowling ball from Storm Products will be offered with the pro-am entry fee for an additional $110.
The pro-am will be a WIBC "Bowl for the Cure" charity event. All admissions collected, plus proceeds from raffles, will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Pro-am entry forms may be obtained at local centers or by calling A-Plus at 792-2173. A-Plus proprietors Chuck and Nancy Fairchild are PWBA Northeast Region directors.
For seniors
YOUNGSTOWN -- The weekend of Oct. 3-5 brings something new for senior bowlers -- those age 50 and over.
The Senior All-Star Bowling Association, also known as SASBA in the Southwest for over 14 years, has come to the Great Lakes area.
The slower-paced tournament for the 50-and-over crowd will take place at A-Plus Family Bowl on Mahoning Ave. It begins with sweepers on Friday afternoons. The event continues Saturday mornings and Sunday.
There is also a 60-and-over division. Periodically, Super Seniors Only tournaments will be scheduled.
Part of series
The ABC-sanctioned scratch events are part of a series covering Ohio, Michigan, western Pennsylvania and western New York. A-Plus proprietor Chuck Fairchild is Great Lakes region director.
Entry fees from bowlers and added money by the host center contributes to the prize fund.
The next event will be a senior/junior doubles at AMF Akron Lanes, Oct. 17-19.
