Hoban senior sets news state record, trumps NFL
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) -- Bishop Hoban senior Gerry McGroarty kicked a 64-yard field goal Saturday, a new state record that is longer than the NFL's longest field goal.
McGroarty's previous long had been 54 yards. His kick Saturday, on the last play of a 52-0 win over Bishop Hafey, easily cleared the uprights.
"I never tried over 60 [in practice], I don't think," McGroarty said. "It was the same as if it was a short field goal, a 40-yarder or an extra point. I used the same exact motion."
McGroarty's kick surpassed the previous state record of 58 yards, set last year by Matt Domonkos of Bishop McDevitt High School in Johnstown. The national high school record is 68 yards by Dirk Borgognone of Sparks, Nev., set in 1985.
Jason Elam and Tom Dempsey share the NFL record of 63 yards.
Although the kick came with 12 seconds in the game, Bishop Hafey interim coach Mike Bugda said he didn't see the record try as running up the score.
