CANFIELD -- The intersection of Shields and Raccoon roads has reopened after being closed for addition of left-turn lanes and a new traffic signal. The $692,000 U.S. Route 62 improvement project was completed almost two weeks ahead of schedule, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.
Critically injured
YOUNGSTOWN -- Diana L. Allen, 42, of Silliman Street was in critical condition this morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center with head and internal injuries after a one-car crash at 8:40 p.m. Monday at Mahoning and Belle Vista avenues. The car struck a utility pole as it traveled east on Mahoning, police said.
Gunfire leads to arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Aaron M. Freet of Girard was arrested at 1:30 a.m. today, accused of firing a handgun wildly into the air after being removed from Pogo's Pub on West Rayen Avenue near Youngstown State University, police said. Freet, 22, of Main Street, was found hiding in the rear lot of a restaurant-coffeehouse on Lincoln Avenue. He faces charges of discharging a firearm within city limits and discharging a firearm while intoxicated.
Freet was removed from Pogo's after getting into an argument with a woman, police said.
Local tie in Ore. slaying
NILES -- A former Weathersfield Township woman was killed in Portland, Ore., and the father of her son is charged with first-degree aggravated murder in her death. Heather Dunlap, 27, was found strangled Friday in the Portland apartment of Howard Mayfield. Authorities also said Mayfield, who was arraigned on the murder charge Monday, was scheduled to appear in court last Thursday on charges of attempted assault, assault and felonious assault after Dunlap was choked in July. Dunlap, who still has family in Niles, is also survived by a son, Camron, 3.
Crash kills Pa. man
HUBBARD -- A Pennsylvania man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning in a residential neighborhood. Armond L. Holloway, 33, of Farrell, was northbound on Caroline Avenue near School Street around 10:30 a.m. Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a utility pole, police said.
Boiler problem is fixed
GIRARD -- Pupils at Girard Intermediate School returned to classes today after boiler problems were fixed. The children were dismissed about 1:20 p.m. Monday after the boiler's regulator malfunctioned, causing a loud bang, officials said. School workers said the children were evacuated as a safety precaution, though there was no real danger. Crews worked through the night and had the problem fixed in time for classes today.
Firearm indictment
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has indicted Ruben Calderon, 32, of East Lucius Ave., Youngstown, on a charge of illegally possessing a firearm, which he is prohibited from doing because of a 1995 conviction in Brooklyn, N.Y., for attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Fire extinguisher course
YOUNGSTOWN -- The National Safety Council, Northern Ohio Chapter, will conduct a fire extinguisher course from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday in its office at 25 E. Boardman St., using a new computer that simulates five kinds of fires. The class meets OSHA training requirements. The cost is $30 for council members, $40 for nonmembers, with a 50 percent discount for multiple attendees from the same organization. Call by Wednesday to register.
Counterfeit bill
AUSTINTOWN -- Police said Monday that a counterfeit $20 bill was passed Sunday at Wendy's, 52 Interstate Blvd.
Cash, guns stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- Police said a burglary netted the thief $1,500 and two 9 mm handguns. The break-in occurred between 6 and 8 p.m. Friday at an apartment in the 2200 block of South Raccoon Road, police said Monday.
