Event to focus on fire prevention

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Fire Department will hold a fire prevention day open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at No. 1 fire station on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard downtown.
The theme is "Get out, stay out."
Hubert Clardy Jr., chief fire inspector, said the event will kick off fire prevention month and include a variety of safety demonstrations hosted by fire prevention bureau inspectors Sharyl E. Frasier, Marcia E. Harris and Leslie J. Fishel.
Clardy said the program includes demonstrations and safety tips from the YFD rescue squad (extrication of vehicle accident victims); YFD rope rescue team; St. Elizabeth Health Center; Rural Metro Ambulance; Sparky, the fire prevention dog; officers from the Youngstown Police Department juvenile division and Drug Abuse Resistance Education; city health department, Safety Counsel of Northeastern Ohio; Red Cross; Mahoning County Safe Kids' Coalition; Mahoning County Disaster Services Agency; and more. A YFD historian will also be on hand.
The Neely trailer, named after children who died in a house fire, will be used to demonstrate how to safely leave a burning structure, Clardy said. The trailer, similar to a mobile home, can be filled with smoke, he said.
Kids will also be taught how to dial 911.
Awards will be given and refreshments served.
