DETROIT -- Detroit avoided the 1962 Mets' record for losses, finishing their best six-game stretch of the season. Detroit (43-119) used a seven-run sixth inning to win for the fifth time in six games. Mike Maroth (9-21) gave up two runs on eight hits and a walk to win for the third time in four starts.
Yankees 3, Orioles 1
NEW YORK -- David Wells earned his 200th win and was pulled by manager-for-a-day Roger Clemens. Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer and Drew Henson got his first major league hit for the Yankees. One day after earning his 310th win, Clemens made out the lineup and managed the team in place of Joe Torre. The Rocket removed Wells (15-7) in the eighth and hugged him on the mound.
Devil Rays 3, Red Sox 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Victor Zambrano (12-10) got the victory as Tampa Bay (63-99) won its second straight and avoided becoming the 11th team to lose 100 games in three straight seasons.
White Sox 5, Royals 1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Esteban Loaiza took a no-hit bid into the seventh in what might have been Jerry Manuel's final game as Chicago manager. Loaiza (21-9) didn't allow a hit until Julius Matos doubled with two outs in the seventh. Jose Lima (8-3) gave up five runs and six hits in five innings for the Royals.
Mariners 9, Athletics 3
SEATTLE -- Jamie Moyer set a club record with his 21st victory as Seattle completed a series sweep. Moyer (21-7) pitched six innings and gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits.
Angels 4, Rangers 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Scott Spiezio hit a tie-breaking two-run single and Barry Wesson hit his first major league homer for Anaheim. Scott Shields (5-6) allowed a run and five hits in seven innings for the Angels. John Thomson (13-14) took the loss for the Rangers (71-91), who finished last for the fourth straight season in Buck Showalter's first season as manager.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves 5, Phillies 2
PHILADELPHIA -- Atlanta clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Greg Maddux (16-11) earned his 289th career victory and Robert Fick drove in two runs for the Braves. Kevin Millwood (14-12), who earlier this season threw the last no-hitter at the Vet, allowed five runs and 11 hits in four innings.
Astros 8, Brewers 5
HOUSTON -- Jeff Bagwell homered twice and drove in four runs for Houston. Ricky Stone (6-4), the fourth of six Astros pitchers, threw a perfect seventh inning for the victory.
Marlins 4, Mets 0
MIAMI -- Mike Lowell went 1-for-4 with a double in his return from a broken hand after a four-week absence. Dontrelle Willis (14-6) allowed three hits over five innings. Jeremy Griffiths (1-4) allowed all four runs and seven hits in four innings.
Expos 2, Reds 1
CINCINNATI -- Brian Schneider hit a two-run double and six Montreal pitchers made it stand up. After the game, the Reds re-signed Barry Larkin to a $700,000, one-year contract -- six days after the shortstop turned down a take-it-or-leave it offer.
Cardinals 9, Diamondbacks 5
PHOENIX -- Woody Williams (18-9) set a career high for victories and Jason Isringhausen got his 22nd save. Diamondbacks rookie Brandon Webb (10-9) took the loss.
Rockies 10, Padres 8
SAN DIEGO -- In the final game at Qualcomm Stadium, Javier Lopez (4-1) pitched a perfect sixth for the win and Justin Speier got his ninth save. Jay Witasick (3-7) took the loss.
Giants 12, Dodgers 3
SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds had two hits and drove in a run while preparing for the playoffs as San Francisco won its 100th game. Kevin Correia (3-1) got the win. Wilson Alvarez (6-2) took the loss.
