AMERICAN LEAGUE Grand slam homer sinks Tribe in finale
TORONTO (AP) -- Carlos Delgado thinks his major league-leading 145 RBIs could help him win the AL MVP award.
"I hope so. If that makes a difference that would be great," Delgado said after hitting a grand slam in his final at-bat as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Cleveland 6-2 Sunday.
The Toronto slugger finished with 27 more RBIs than Texas' Alex Rodriguez, who has the second most in the AL.
"I put up some good numbers," Delgado said. "They've been mentioning my name, but we'll have to wait and see. If they call me I'll be excited, I'll be happy. Believe me, I'm not going to send it back."
Ninth career grand slam
Delgado, who hit four home runs in a game Thursday night, hit his 42nd homer in the first inning. It was his second grand slam of the season and the ninth of his career.
"I ended up on a great note," Delgado said. "When people ask 'What did you do in your last at-bat?' I can say I hit a grand slam, and I can say that for 4 1/2 months. It's kind of cool."
The Blue Jays finished with 86 victories, one more than their preseason goal.
"Ten over, that's a good mark," Toronto manager Carlos Tosca said. "Hopefully we'll continue to move forward from there. We got a bit sideways at times this season but the club never quit playing."
The Indians went 68-94, their worst record since going 57-105 in 1991.
"Our young players made progress," Cleveland manager Eric Wedge. "They gained experience and they didn't make any excuses. They just went about everything the way you're supposed to do it."
