MID-AMERICAN Cribbs' TD throws power Kent State; Miami beats rival



Northern Illinois defeated Iowa State, 24-16.

KENT -- Joshua Cribbs threw two touchdown passes to Darrell Dowery and Kent State scored 20 points off Central Florida's eight turnovers Saturday to beat the Golden Knights 36-16.
The Golden Flashes (3-2, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) kicked field goals following two of UCF's four fumbles and scored two touchdowns after interceptions, including Shannon Davis' 43-yard return with 1:09 to play.
Ryan Schneider completed 24-of-36 for 199 yards with one touchdown and three of the Golden Knights' four interceptions. Tavaris Capers caught nine passes for 82 yards and a 13-yard TD for UCF (1-3, 0-1).
Cribbs finished 15-of-22 for 129 yards, and David Alston had 121 yards rushing on 22 carries for Kent State.
Miami 42, Cincinnati 37
OXFORD -- Ben Roethlisberger passed for 377 yards and two touchdowns, and Mike Smith and Cal Murray each ran for two scores.
The RedHawks (3-1) built a 42-17 lead early in the fourth quarter and held on despite three late touchdowns from the Bearcats (3-1).
Van Booker caught a 1-yard TD pass from Gino Guidugli to make it 42-23 with 8:15 remaining. The Bearcats pulled within 42-30 when Daven Holly returned a blocked field goal 78 yards for touchdown with 4:04 to play.
George Murray's 5-yard TD run with 1:51 left made it 42-37 and Cincinnati's defense forced Miami to punt, giving the Bearcats a final chance.
But Thaddeus Lewis fumbled Mike Wafzig's punt at the Bearcats' 15-yard line as he was hit by Michael Larkin, and Ryan Sprague recovered for Miami.
Roethlisberger completed 31 of 49 passes with touchdowns of 14 and 7 yards to Matt Brandt, but he also threw three interceptions. Brandt had eight catches for 93 yards, and Martin Nance caught five passes for 115 yards.
Smith had scoring runs of 7 and 1 yard, and Murray had TDs of 5 and 3 yards. Miami managed only 98 yards rushing on 38 carries.
Cincinnati's Richard Hall ran for 161 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 61 yards and a score. Guidugli was 17-of-39 for 226 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
N. Illinois 24, Iowa St. 16
DEKALB, Ill. -- Michael Turner ran for 134 yards and one touchdown, and Josh Haldi threw two TD passes for No. 20 Northern Illinois.
Northern Illinois, ranked for the first time ever, led 17-16 late in the fourth quarter when safety Akil Grant picked off a wobbling pass and returned it 8 yards to midfield.
That set up a 49-yard drive that ended with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Haldi to P.J. Fleck with 1:55 remaining. The win gave the Huskies (4-0) a perfect 3-0 record against teams from BCS conferences. They knocked off Maryland in overtime to open the season, and beat Alabama on the road last Saturday.
Haldi finished 15-of-22 for 167 yards.
Iowa State took a 7-0 lead on a 2-yard TD run by Hiawatha Rutland that capped an 8-play, 56-yard drive.
Northern Illinois tied it when Vinson Reynolds intercepted a screen pass 5 yards into the backfield and returned it 65 yards to the 13. Turner put Northern Illinois at the 2 on runs of 9 and 2 yards, and scored on the third play of the drive when he hurdled a defender.
The Huskies took a 14-10 halftime lead when Haldi threw a 38-yard touchdown to Dan Sheldon just inside the near pylon.
Boston College 53, Ball State 29
BOSTON -- Quinton Porter threw three touchdown passes and Boston College took advantage of two fumbles that led to easy scores.
Derrick Knight ran 20 times for 175 yards and one touchdown for the Eagles (3-2). Talmadge Hill had a pair of touchdown passes to Dante Ridgeway for Ball State (2-3) in the first football meeting between the schools.
Porter threw two touchdown passes to tight end Sean Ryan in the second half and completed 14-of-20 after the first quarter as the Eagles opened up their offense. He finished 17-for-25 for 131 yards.
BC capitalized on a pair of botched snaps from Ball State's punting unit, to take a 28-10 lead midway into the second quarter.
With the score tied at 7, BC's Grant Adams recovered a fumble in the back of the end zone for a touchdown after the first low snap on an attempted punt. It gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead with 14 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
After Ball State's Brian Jackson kicked a 26-yard field goal three minutes into the second quarter, Knight had a 42-yard touchdown run to make it 21-10.
On the ensuing possession, the Cardinals' punting game failed again. This time, BC's Jazzmen Williams recovered the fumble after low snap at Ball State's 11. BC made it 28-10 on Horace Dodd's 3-yard scoring run after he picked up 8 yards on the previous play.
Hill's first touchdown pass to Ridgeway, a 44-yard pass, cut it to 28-16. The Cardinals failed on a 2-point attempt.
Ball State's Jesse Avant recovered Knight's fumble and returned it to the Eagles 8 on the second play of the third quarter before Hill hit Ridgeway with a 7-yard pass, closing the gap to 28-23.
The Eagles made it 36-23 on Porter's 1-yard toss to Ryan. The score closed a 12-play, 81-yard drive that was highlighted by Knight's 49 yards on the ground. Porter also connected with Ryan on the two-point conversion.
Sandro Sciortino's 26-yard field goal increased it 39-23 late in the third quarter.
Williams' interception and return to the Cardinals 9 set up BC's next score. Porter hit Ryan with a 2-yard touchdown pass, making it 46-23. Dodd added a short scoring run with 5:15 to play. Ball State backup quarterback Joey Lynch had a 6-yard touchdown pass to Michael Steinhaus in the closing minutes.
BC moved ahead 7-0 on Porter's 3-yard scoring pass to Greg Toal, but Ball State tied it on Hill's 1-yard scoring run.
