NEW WILMINGTON -- Two former Youngstown City Series athletes -- Aldridge Jones (East High) and Booker Newberry (South High) -- will be among seven persons inducted into the Westminster College Titan Sports Hall of Fame Saturday.
Jones, a 1994 Westminster graduate, was a three-year starter and four-year letterman at defensive back for the Titans' football team.
Newberry, a 1995 Westminster graduate, was a standout in basketball and track for the Titans.
Jones has high rankings
Jones, who now lives in Ocala, Fla., ranks No. 1 on Westminster's all-time list in punt return yards (1,465).
He also is No. 2 in kickoff return average yards (26.6), No. 3 in punt return yards average (12.2), No. 4 in kick return yards (1,063) and interceptions, and tied for No. 7 in pass breakups.
An NAIA first team All-American in 1992 and 1993, Jones also had career totals of 127 solo tackles, 84 assists, 37 pass breakups and 20 interceptions. He scored 10 TDs on kickoff, punt and interception returns combined.
Newberry in 1,000-point club
Newberry, who now lives in Poland and is a part-time assistant coach with the Westminster basketball team, is a member of the Titans' 1,000-point club.
He has 1,049 career points that rank No. 27 on the all-time list -- despite playing only three seasons after transferring from St. Mary's (Calif.) College.
Newberry led the 1993-94 team to a 25-3 record, and an appearance at the NAIA Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
He was an NAIA All-American in both 1993-94 and 1994-95, while also being named Westminster's Most Valuable Player both years.
Holds shot put record
Newberry also was a two-year letterman in track, and still holds the school record in the shot put (50 feet, 3 inches). He qualified for the NAIA national championships.
Newberry and his wife, Willina, have four children: Shanika, Klashell, David and Roslyn.
Also being inducted are Jay DeBolt (1957, track and football), Jennifer McNatt Laidlaw (1994), softball and volleyball; Earl Mayer Jr. (1965), golf; Lisa Legarsky Nichols (1994), volleyball; and Ralph Veights (1954), football.
Manos, Knight star at Hiram
HIRAM -- Freshman Lyndsey Manos from Newton Falls High and sophomore Jessica Knight from Lakeview High have been the top scorers for the Hiram College women's soccer team through the first eight games.
Manos, a midfielder and defender, had five goals and two assists for a team-leading 12 points, while Knight had four goals for eight points.
Manos got her team-leading fifth goal in Hiram's 2-1 loss to Mount Union.
The Terriers had a 2-6 record over the span for coach Nicole Barbuto.
Knight scored hat trick
Knight, also a midfielder and defender, achieved her first hat trick as a collegiate player this season. She scored all three goals, including the game-winning goal in Hiram's 3-2 road win over Hilbert (N.Y.) College, on Sept. 10.
Knight received an assist from Manos on one of her goals.
Manos scored Hiram's lone goal in a 5-1 loss at home to Marietta Sept. 13.
Also on the Hiram team are Erin Gavazzi, a sophomore midfielder and defender from Champion High; and LeAnn Humes, a freshman defender from Mercer High.
Divito standout at Heidelberg
TIFFIN -- Tim Divito, a junior on the Heidelberg College cross country team from Boardman High, has been a standout this season.
Divito led his team to victory in the Tiffin/Heidelberg College Cross Country Invitational recently in 26:02 to place fifth overall. Four of his teammates placed in the top 14 to aid the win.
He also was second on the team and eighth overall at the Wilmington Invitational in 27:02.99, helping the Student Princes to place fifth.
Divito was third on the team and 44th overall in the Mel Brodt Invitational in 27:35.01, to help Heidelberg tie for first place with Baldwin-Wallace in the Division III section with 35 points.
Huber on Case WR soccer team
Ken Huber, a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High, is a freshman member of the Case Western Reserve University soccer team.
Huber plays a defender's position and has started four of the Spartans' first five games. The team posted a 2-2-1 record over the span.
