Germany 6, Argentina 1
WASHINGTON -- Germany was nearly through an impressive first round of the Women's World Cup when a potentially serious setback occurred: Steffi Jones went down with a knee injury. The veteran defender left in the 62nd minute and was taken to a hospital for X-rays and an MRI on her right knee. The preliminary diagnosis was a torn ACL. Jones' injury will make it tougher for a team that was poised for its best shot at a World Cup title. Germany (3-0) easily won Group C, outscoring its opponents 13-2, and will play the second-place team from Group D in the quarterfinals Thursday in Portland, Ore. Bettina Wiegmann and substitutes Conny Pohlers and Martian Mueller also scored for Germany. Substitute Ionian Gaitan scored the first World Cup goal for Argentina (0-3), which was outscored 15-1 in its tournament debut.
France 1, Brazil 1
WASHINGTON -- Katia scored her fourth goal of the tournament in the 58th minute as Brazil rested two of its starters to keep them from getting a second yellow card. Showing the youthful flair so often displayed by their men's team, the Brazilians scored eight goals and allowed just two in three games. They will play the second-place team from Group A in the quarterfinals Wednesday. France (1-1-1) salvaged a draw in second-half injury time on a goal from 2002 WUSA MVP Marinette Pichon.
Norway 7, South Korea 1
FOXBORO, Mass. -- Norway probably will face the United States in a quarterfinal Wednesday night in Foxboro. Dagny Mellgren had two goals for Norway. Canada, which finished second in Group C, will play Thursday in Portland. The opponent will be the Group D winner, either Russia or China, who meet today in Portland. Canada used its superior height on two goals as it came back from a 1-0 deficit. Christine Sinclair's go-ahead goal just cleared the raised hands of goalkeeper Nozomi Yamago in the 49th minute and. In the 72nd minute, Kara Lang shot the ball from 15 yards out on the left. It kept drifting to the far right of the net. Yamago backpedaled but it dropped just behind her.
