CROSS COUNTRY Jake Lape runs Spartans to win
COLUMBIANA -- Jake Lape of the Boardman High cross country team placed fifth in 18 minutes, 36 seconds, leading the Spartans to the boys championship Saturday in the fifth Columbiana Invitational at Firestone Park.
The Spartans' Dave Haushalter placed seventh (18:44), Jim Hlebak was eighth (18:45), Rick Lape 13th (19:00) and Tim Weaver 17th (19:11).
The Spartans scored 49 points for team laurels, while Ashtabula Edgewood finished second with 50 and Cardinal Mooney was third with 61, as 15 schools competed in the 5000-meter run.
Headman is winner
Jason Headman of Ashtabula Edgewood won the race (17:50), with Gary Bowman of Cuyahoga Falls second (17:58) and Mooney's Colin Durina third (18:27).
Ashtabula Lakeside placed five girls in the top nine places to win the team championship with 29 points. Poland came in second with 64 and Boardman was third with 99.
Mallory Dragon of Lakeside took first place in 20:06. Brittany Durkin (21:54) and Jesse Moore (21:55) of Boardman finished second and third, while Poland's Colleen Moran was fourth (21:59).
