Poster contest winners
Several area pupils were winners in the annual No Smoking Poster Contest, sponsored by Health for Humanity Ohio Network. First-place winners received $100, and all winners took home a cash prize. Five Poland Middle School eighth-graders won awards in one age category. They were Mark Cramer, first place, and Kori Jeswald, second; third- fourth- and fifth-place winners were Jeremy O'Halloran, Kyle Gutman and Stephanie Pridon, respectively. In a younger age category, winners were fifth-grader Allison Armeni, W.S. Guy Middle School, first place; sixth-grader Amanda Harmon, Springfield Intermediate School, second; Carissa Whitehouse and Gia Delisio, both Poland North Elementary School third-graders, third and fourth places, respectively; and sixth-grader Branden Stevanus, W.S. Guy Middle School, fifth.

Art college day
COLUMBUS -- Columbus College of Art & amp; Design will hold College Day for high school juniors and seniors from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Canzani Center, Cleveland Avenue and East Gay Street. Items discussed will include CCAD programs, tours, scholarship and financial aid. Students are encouraged to bring portfolios for review, and parents are welcome. Medical transcription
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center offers a comprehensive medical transcription class beginning early next year. The class will be from 6-9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 23 to May 26. A required orientation is 6 p.m. Feb. 11. The center will also offer a pharmacy technician class from 6-8:30 Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning Jan. 6. A knowledge of Windows software and 35 words-per-minute typing skills are required. CANFIELD -- A Malone College accelerated management degree completion program information meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Malone College Continuing Studies Center, at the Westford Professional Centre, 4137 Boardman-Canfield Road. Named chief of staff
ROOTSTOWN -- Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine recently named Kathleen C. Ruff as its chief of staff. Ruff will be in charge of managing projects and the budget of the president's office and for briefing the president on policy and other issues. Ruff received her bachelor's and master's degrees at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Scholarship pageant
INDIANAPOLIS -- Applications are being accepted from students in colleges and universities in Ohio and Indiana for the Miss Black Collegiate Scholarship Pageant. The event's inauguration will be May 14-16 in Cincinnati, and several pageants will take place in the Midwest in 2004. Grand prizes for each pageant are $2,000 scholarships. PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Scholarships from $2,000 to full-tuition are available through the seventh annual National Outstanding Student Leader of the Year Scholarship Competition sponsored by the Center for Leadership Studies at Johnson & amp; Wale University. NOAA applications
Applications for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions are being accepted through Jan. 30. The administration is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Undergraduate students selected complete internships; graduate students selected are hired at NOAA and trained. Law Day essays
The Ohio State Bar Association seeks entries from pupils in grades seven to 12 for its 2004 Law Day "There Ought To Be A Law" essay contest. Pupils are judged based on grade divisions at local, regional and state levels. State winners receive U.S. Savings Bonds. Teachers may submit one entry per division per school. Deadline is Jan 31. Visit from a robot
Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility will perform a special demonstration of its humanoid robot this March at the school that submits the winning entry to the national ASIMO Essay Contest on robotics.
Public and private elementary, middle, junior high and high schools are eligible to enter by selecting pupils to write an essay describing their vision for the future role of humanoid robots.
