Aerosol can is suspected in girl's death

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The death of a 10-year-old girl who collapsed and died during an after-school program may have been caused by an aerosol air freshener being used as an inhalant, police said.
The girl was seen with her head on a table Wednesday covered by a coat, police said. A chaperone asked her if everything OK and the girl said yes, putting her head back down on the table.
About 20 minutes later, the girl collapsed and began foaming at the mouth, police said.
Rayshell Griffin, of Pittsburgh, was pronounced dead just after 6 p.m. A can of Glade Air Freshener was found inside the girl's coat, police said.
"Her clothes were saturated with the smell of the air freshener and the can was found," police Cmdr. Maurita Bryant said in a prepared statement.
Detectives learned that the girl picked up the air freshener at a store and brought it with her to a Thanksgiving party, which was attended by about 60 students and was held by the Beverly Jewel Wall Lovelace Youth Empowerment Program.
The Allegheny County Coroner's office is investigating and a cause of death will be issued when toxicology tests are completed, authorities said.
