PREP ICE HOCKEY Canfield falls to Midview in tournament's opening round

The Cardinals had defeated Boardman earlier in the day.

BOARDMAN -- Joe Cappiccioni had three goals and three assists, and Jon Orosko added two goals, as the Midview High ice hockey team defeated Canfield 8-2 Friday in opening-round action of the Canfield Cardinal Thanksgiving Tournament at the Ice Zone.
Earlier in the day, the Cardinals (1-1-0) defeated Boardman, 6-4, while the Middies (2-0-0) had no problem disposing of West Geauga, 15-5.
"We had a very big win against Boardman earlier in the day and I really feel we got emotionally too high," Canfield coach Joe Villano said. "When we met some adversity against Midview in the second game, we started pressing and our game became undisciplined."
Tie is closest
Greg Wakefield's goal at 8:47 gave Midview a 1-0 lead after the first period. Canfield's Andy Davis, with an assist from Zach Kovac, tied the score at a goal apiece at 2:20 of the second period. That would be the closest the Cardinals would get the rest of the way.
The Middies' Jon Orosko then scored his two goals at 4:17 (a power-play goal) and 6:11 as Midview took a 3-1 lead.
Cappiccioni's first goal of the game at 12:10 increased the Middies' lead to 4-1, but Mike Vrable of the Cardinals found the net at 13:03 to cut the Midview margin to 4-2 after two periods.
"Joe Cappiccioni is really something special," Midview coach Rob Williams said. "He is deaf, yet communicates with me and the bench really well during the course of a game. He is an outstanding skater and a player with a very bright future."
Dressing only nine players -- they had one player go down earlier in the week with appendicitis and another sidelined with a broken elbow -- the Middies didn't seem to mind playing shorthanded as they scored all four goals in the final period.
Greg Urio started the scoring barrage at 2:21 with an unassisted goal, and when Chris Kaspar's only goal (on a power play) found the net at 3:51, it gave the Middies a 6-2 margin.
Cappiccioni rounded out the scoring with his second goal at 9:30, then at 11:20 sealed his hat trick with an unassisted, shorthanded goal for the Midshipmen.
"While I was disappointed in our overall play, I was impressed with the play of two of our freshmen, Zach Kovac and Bill Pfau," Villano said. "They kept their composure and discipline."
Midview outshot the Cardinals 37-25, with goalie Ben Orosko rejecting 23 of 25 Canfield shots.
Canfield goalie Mark Takach had 29 saves.
Notes
Also in tournament action, Poland defeated both Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, 11-2, and Hopewell, 12-5; Hopewell toppled Jackson, 5-3, while Jackson handed CVCA an 8-2 setback.
