Hearing reset for two accused in man's killing

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A preliminary hearing for two George Junior Republic students accused of killing a staff member has been rescheduled to December.
Anthony Machicote, 17, of North Versailles, Pa., and Jeremy Melvin, 16, of McKeesport, are charged with criminal homicide in the death of Wayne Urey Jr., 43, of Mercer, an evening care worker at the ungated juvenile detention and education center in Pine Township.
They were to have had a preliminary hearing today before District Justice Lawrence Silvis, but it has been postponed at the request of attorneys handling the case.
The hearing has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 12 and will be at the Mercer office of District Justice Ruth French. Silvis will still preside over the hearing but had it moved to a larger courtroom.
Authorities said the teenagers attacked and strangled Urey, stole the keys to his pickup and fled the institution early Nov. 10. They surrendered to authorities later in the day in Pittsburgh.
Machicote and Melvin also face charges of criminal conspiracy, robbery, theft, aggravated assault and escape and are being held without bail on the homicide charge.
