Dials leads Ohio State in Maui Invitational win

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) -- Terence Dials, a Boardman High graduate, had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Ohio State avoided its first 0-3 start in 46 years with a 77-71 victory over Central Michigan on Tuesday in the consolation round of the Maui Invitational.
The Buckeyes (1-2) will play the winner of the Santa Clara-Villanova game for fifth place today.
Ohio State, which lost to San Diego State in the opening round, used a spread offense to go up by as many as 10 points in the second half, 68-58 with 4:46 to play.
A dunk by J.J. Sullinger had the Buckeyes ahead 71-63 with 3:19 left, but that was their last field goal of the game. Tony Bowne scored five straight points for the Chippewas (0-2), and his 3-pointer with 1:43 left made it 71-68.
But Ohio State, which made just 21 of its first 35 free throws, went 6-for-6 from the line over the final 18 seconds to seal the win.
Tony Stockman had 14 points and seven assists for the Buckeyes, and Ricardo Billings had 13, including four of the closing free throws.
Gerrit Brigitha had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Central Michigan, which lost to Dayton in the opening round. Brandon Voorhees and Kevin Nelson each added 10 points for the Chippewas.
The Buckeyes started the 1957-58 season with seven straight losses and finished 9-13.
