CITY SERIES | Girls basketball preview

CHANEY
Head coach: Christine Maga, first season.
2002-03 record: 7-14, 3-3 City.
Returning letterwinners: Quiana Faison (5-9, Jr., F); Courtney Williams (5-8, Jr., G/F); Adrienne Peace (5-5, Jr., G); Chastity Santana (5-6, Sr., G); Shenae Jenkins (5-7, Jr., F); Monica Peace (5-5, Jr., G); Lavielle Trevathan (5-10, Jr., F); Alicia West (5-7, Jr., G); Brittaney Cobb (5-9, Soph., F); Kayla Griffin (5-5, Soph., G).
Newcomers: Tiawna Rodgers (5-5, Jr., G); Tierra Jones (5-8, Fr., F).
Outlook: Must replace top two scorers from last season, but return nine letterwinners on a young and improving team. With just one senior, Chaney's outlook for next season should be bright.
RAYEN
Head coach: Holly Seimetz, 11th season (110-95).
2002-03 record: 17-4, 6-0 City
Returning letterwinners: Ashley Myers (5-9, Sr., F); Taryn Perkins (5-8, Sr., F); Erica Smallwood (5-4, Sr., G); Taniesha Holland (5-5, Jr., G); Rilonda Neal (5-11, Jr., F); Brittany Hines (5-4, Jr., G).
Newcomers: Alexis Crosby (5-4, Soph., G); Kenysha Tennant (5-3, Fr., G).
Outlook: With just three returning letterwinners, Rayen will need younger players to step in quickly. Still, the Tigers will be heavily favored to win their ninth league title in 11 years. Rayen has gone 24-0 in the league over the past five years. The Tigers have speed and numbers but little experience. Seimetz has coached 15 seasons at South and Rayen combined with a 152-157 record, including 70-24 in the league.
