Football team landssix on academic team
ST. LOUIS -- Youngstown State senior free safety Scott Thiessen was named to the Gateway Football Conference's Academic first team, the league announced on Monday.
Overall, YSU had six players named with academic all-conference honors.
Senior linebacker Justin Dellarose and senior fullback Chris DiMauro were second-team all-academic selections.
Senior tailback Mike Burns (Niles), sophomore tight end Shawn Carlson (Boardman) and sophomore wide receiver Kyle Smith were named Honorable-Mention.
Thiessen, who was also a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, owns a 3.59 GPA in special education. This past fall he was second on the Penguins with 86 total tackles while recording three interceptions.
Olmstead honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State basketball player Jessica Olmstead was picked the Horizon League player of the week.
Olmstead, a 5-9 guard, scored a career-high 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting in a 79-67 win over Bowling Green Saturday.
WNIO sets schedulefor women's basketball
YOUNGSTOWN -- Radio station WNIO-AM (1390) will broadcast 14 YSU women's basketball games this season.
The game dates, opponents and air times are: December 3 at Buffalo, 11 a.m.; Dec. 7 at Toledo, 2 p.m.; Dec. 13 Kent State, 2 p.m.; Dec. 21 at Akron, 2 p.m. and Dec. 28 at Niagara, 1 p.m.

Softball signings
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State softball coach Christy Cameron signed two players.
McKenzie Bedra, an infielder from Bowling Green High School, hit .422 last season with two homers.
Also coming to YSU will be Becky Hibner from Salem, Ore. She was honorable mention all-state as a junior.
Volleyball signings
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State volleyball coach Joe Conroy signed three players.
Brittany Abel of Canton McKinley is a 6-foot middle hitter who was an honorable mention all-Ohio pick.
Jessica Fraley of LaGrange and Sarah Wellner of Miamisburg also are coming to YSU.
Fraley, a 6-1 middle hitter, is a two-time second-team all-state selection and Wellner is a 6-1 outside hitter who led her team to an 18-5 record.

Poland prevailsin club ice hockey
BOARDMAN -- The Poland High ice hockey club team defeated Boardman 6-4 during Northeast Ohio High School Hockey Association action Sunday night at the Ice Zone.
Tim Jones, Robby Wyand, Brett Pitzulo, Aaron Zarbock, Jim Pasquine and Chris Zamudio each scored for Poland, and goalie Cody Hiznay stopped 16 of 20 shots.
Zach Skook and Bob Walla each scored two goals for Boardman.
Poland will play in the Canfield Thanksgiving Tournament this weekend.

Mount Union preparesfor 2nd-round game
ALLIANCE -- The Mount Union College football team will play host to Wisconsin-La Crosse in a second round Division III playoff game Saturday at Mount Union Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
La Crosse (10-1) advanced with a 52-13 victory over Concordia. The Eagles are making their ninth appearance in the Div. III playoffs.

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. -- Warren Spahn, the winningest left-hander in baseball history and a leader of the dominant Milwaukee Braves teams of the late 1950s, died at his home. He was 82.
Red Sox closeto signing Schilling
PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. -- Curt Schilling is headed to the Boston Red Sox, if he waives his no-trade clause with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He announced the tentative trade to reporters.
Schilling is scheduled to make $12 million next season with the chance to earn almost $2 million more in performance bonuses, but he wants an extension before agreeing to a trade.
Mourning retires again
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New Jersey Nets center Alonzo Mourning is leaving basketball again because the kidney disease he's had for three years is worsening and he needs a transplant.
The announcement came just a few months after Mourning, 33, signed a four-year contract with the Nets.
The four-time All-Star sat out last season and large portions of two of the last three years because of the life-threatening kidney ailment, focal glomerulosclerosis.

CHICAGO -- Chicago Bulls fired coach Bill Cartwright. Pete Myers will be the interim coach, and general manager John Paxson hopes to name a replacement within the next week.

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Stanford swept the men's and women's team titles at the NCAA cross country championships.
The Cardinal placed four runners among the top six to repeat as the men's champion with 24 points, the second-lowest total in the history of the NCAA meet.
The women edged two-time defending champion BYU 120-128.
