Water company accidentally shuts off supply to the library

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Water company officials inadvertently shut of waterlines to the New Castle Public Library, causing it to be closed most of the weekend.
Lynn Slovonsky, library board member, said the building closed early Friday, Saturday and Monday because there was no water service. Patrons were unable to use the lavatories, he said.
Surrounding businesses did have water service and were open.
Marianne Kelly, a Pennsylvania-American Water spokeswoman, said workers shut off the wrong valve while working at North and East streets last week.
"We are terribly sorry about the inconvenience we caused them," she said. "It was simply a matter of shutting off the wrong valve."
The water company was taking old waterlines out of service as part of the downtown renovation project, Kelly said. Workers believed that the library was serviced by a second line, but it was not, she said.
Water service was restored Monday night, she added.
