SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a fast-working burglar took an undisclosed amount of cash from the Outdoor Sportsman Inc. store at 137 E. Silver St. The intruder used a large stone to smash the glass front door and, once inside, tripped a motion alarm.
A police car was at the scene within a minute but the thief was gone, along with the drawer from the cash register, police said.
Garage damaged
SALEM -- Someone used a hatchet to damage a garage, Perry Township police said.
Police were called to a home on the 1800 block of state Route 9. The resident told them that someone entered the garage between noon and 6:30 p.m. Monday and used a hatchet to break windows and doors and to damage a camper parked inside the garage.
Aluminum-cans drive
ALLIANCE -- Alliance Area Habitat for Humanity is asking area residents to take their aluminum cans to the Alliance Recycling Center to raise funds for the group's efforts to build more low-cost homes. Habitat also is offering recycling bins for its "Aluminum Cans Build Habitat for Humanity Homes" program. When the cans are taken to the recycling center, residents participating are to indicate the cans are for the Habitat program.
Frozen-turkey donation
EAST PALESTINE -- Middle school pupils are collecting frozen turkeys to aid the needy for Christmas.
They are asking people to drop off the birds at the middle school from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday or Dec. 9 or 16.
The pupils have set a goal of collecting 150 birds. Money also is being accepted. It can be sent to the school with checks made out to "Hunger Busters." The school's address is 320 W. Grant St. The ZIP code is 44413.
Lottery calendars for sale
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County has lottery calendars for sale that are good for 2004. They are based on the Pennsylvania daily number and pay out daily with special days paying more. The shelter also has Wild Women pins and other specialty pins. All of the gifts are under $20.
The shelter also has Christmas cards for sale developed by some of the children who have stayed in the shelter. The financial support allows the shelter to help men, women and children who have been victims of violent crimes, including domestic violence and sexual assault.
Indictment returned
YOUNGSTOWN -- A federal grand jury in Cleveland returned a four-count indictment Tuesday against Adrian Johnson, 30, of West Philadelphia Avenue, charging him with illegal possession of firearms after having been convicted of receiving stolen property in Georgia in 1998.
The grand jury also returned a three-count indictment against Kenneth Stoffer, 19, of Lauderdale Avenue. He is charged with possessing a sawed-off shotgun, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking offense. The cases were investigated by the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and are being prosecuted by Duane J. Deskins, an assistant U.S. attorney.
Counterfeit bills case
YOUNGSTOWN -- A federal grand jury in Cleveland returned a two-count indictment Tuesday against Rashan S. Seifullah of Selma Avenue charging him with making and passing nine counterfeit $100 bills, and making and attempting to pass about $4,000 in $50 bills. The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and Niles Police Department and is being prosecuted by Thomas M. Bauer, an assistant U.S. attorney.
'Obvious phony' $100 bill
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man who handed over a counterfeit $100 bill at the Kentucky Fried Chicken drive-through on South Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to pay for two kids' meals left when questioned by the clerk, reports show. A patrolman confiscated the bill, which he described as an obvious phony. The clerk did not get a good look at the man or his vehicle.
Violence, assault charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police charged a 23-year-old West Evergreen man with domestic violence and assault after they say he cut his pregnant girlfriend and mother of his child and her brother with a kitchen knife early Tuesday.
Police reports say Demetrius Harris came home and began to argue with his live-in girlfriend after she told him not to return to the house. He cut her on the arm and her brother on the hand, reports say. The brother was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. Harris was taken out of a car police spotted pulling away from the house as officers arrived, reports say.
