Mother indicted on tampering charge

WARREN -- The mother of a 21-year-old Newton Falls man convicted of aggravated murder has been indicted on a charge of tampering with evidence.
Terri Karpenko, 45, of Warren Road, Newton Falls, was secretly indicted by the Trumbull County grand jury last week. She has pleaded innocent to the charge and is scheduled to return to court Monday. She is free on a $7,500 bond.
Prosecutors declined to give specifics on the case but said the charge relates to her son's case.
Chad Karpenko, who admitted killing a Warren man, is serving a sentence of life in prison. He will not be eligible for parole for 27 years, court records state.
Chad Karpenko admitted killing Harvey Hill, 66, of Hillsdale N.E., on Sept. 3, 2002. He pleaded guilty in February to aggravated burglary and aggravated murder. Police said Karpenko went to Hill's home to rob him.
Karpenko was brought in by police the day after the shooting. Police said that his fingerprints were found on a window frame of the house and that Karpenko told them he visited the house the week before to look at firearms. Karpenko was released from prison March 11, 2002, after serving three years on a burglary conviction.
