Commission: Collegesshould curb TV shows
An independent commission on college athletics recommended Monday that universities exert more control over television sports shows to protect the NCAA brand image and to prevent student athletes from overexerting themselves.
The commission met with 10 university presidents and television executives Monday to renew its efforts against commercialization in college sports.
Commission Chairman William Friday singled out midweek NCAA football games as a threat to the academic work of student athletes. Regular-season college football games have been played from Tuesday through Saturday this year instead of the traditional Saturday schedules with some Thursday games.
CBS Sports Vice President Mike Aresco told the commission his network depends on the amateur feel of college sports to sell its programming. He told the commission the network instructs its NCAA basketball announcers to avoid discussing the NBA or players moving on the professional level.
