Bristolville woman is appointed to committee monitoring schools

COLUMBUS -- Gov. Bob Taft has appointed a Bristolville woman to a commission overseeing the finances of the Bristol local schools in Trumbull County, which are in fiscal emergency.
The governor's office said Taft appointed Nancy Mahan, the vice president of Mahan Packing,to the Financial Planning and Oversight Commission for the schools.
Aside from Mahan, the commission will also be made up of the director of the Ohio Office of Budget and Management or a representative, the state schools superintendent or a representative, and a school district resident appointed by the mayor.
The panel is to eventually submit a financial plan to the Ohio Department of Education, which can make a recommendation to the state auditor that the emergency designation be lifted.
Earlier this year, state Auditor Betty D. Montgomery declared Bristol schools to be in fiscal emergency and said the school system would face a $785,000 deficit by the end of the school year.
Earlier this month, the State Controlling Board approved lending Bristol schools the money to keep it solvent. Members of the financial oversight commission are not paid.
